Seminar Topic: Piano Competitions & Music Examinations โ Making the Right Choices for Your Child
Speaker: Mr Simon Soh
Many parents wonder whether competitions and examinations are necessary for their childโs musical development. In this seminar, Mr Simon Soh will share his insights from over three decades of teaching experience and discuss:
The advantages and disadvantages of piano competitions.
Are competitions suitable for every child?
How to choose the right music competition and avoid unnecessary pressure.
Which students are likely to benefit from competitions, and who may be better served by a different learning path.
Are music examinations really necessary?
If a child does not take examinations, what should they learn to continue developing as a well-rounded musician?
How parents and teachers can make music education stimulating, enjoyable, and stress-free while maintaining high standards.
Which examination boards and qualifications are appropriate at different stages of learning.
Should students choose face-to-face or online (digital) music examinations? What are the advantages and limitations of each?
Common misconceptions about competitions and examinations.
Practical advice for parents on setting realistic goals and helping children develop a lifelong love for music.
How much practice is enough at each age?
Whether your child is a beginner, an aspiring performer, or simply learning for enjoyment, this seminar will help parents make informed decisions that best suit their childโs personality, abilities, and long-term musical journey.

What makes Philomusic & Art Centre unique is its strong musical foundation, where students learn to connect movement with music, developing not only sound ballet technique but also artistry, musicality, confidence, and expressive storytelling.
Through structured ballet training, regular performances, and recitals, students are encouraged to grow into well-rounded young artists both on and off the stage.
