Hey everyone! 👋 Have you ever heard of the Dragon Boat Festival? It's a vibrant and exciting event celebrated in many parts of Asia, especially in China, but do you know the fascinating story behind it?
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival (端午节), has a rich history dating back over 2,000 years. It commemorates the life and death of Qu Yuan (屈原), a revered poet and minister who lived during the Warring States period of ancient China.
Qu Yuan was a loyal advisor to the Chu King and a patriot deeply loved by the people. However, he faced opposition from corrupt officials and was ultimately exiled. In his despair, Qu Yuan threw himself into the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.
The local people, who admired Qu Yuan, raced out in their boats to save him or recover his body. They beat drums and splashed the water with their paddles to scare away fish and evil spirits. Although they couldn't save him, their efforts gave rise to the tradition of dragon boat racing.
To honor Qu Yuan and keep his spirit alive, people began preparing sticky rice dumplings, known as zongzi (粽子), and throwing them into the river as offerings. Today, the festival is celebrated with exhilarating dragon boat races, delicious zongzi, and vibrant cultural activities.
