Writing in English is a big deal. For starters, learners need to know a word well (with confidence) before using it. On top of that, they would need to grasp how the word can effect the others words written. This back-and-forth mental puzzle is what causes learners to shy away from writing, let alone enjoying it.📝

English speaking skills are increasingly emphasised by the Ministry of Education. Over the years, we've seen how Malaysian fresh graduates struggle to speak even simple sentences for work-related scenarios.

Although Malaysians have always boasted of having a good command of English, years of 'silent English classes🤫' have caused an overall decline. And no, online classes themselves do not trigger this. (How many of your kids speak perfectly while gaming with their friends or gossip with others in WhatsApp calls?)

Studies have shown that 'chalk-the-talk' methods, still popular in school today (online or not), curb English speaking development.

1) Set 'English Speaking Only' days at home (loser cleans the dishes of course.)

2) Karaoke Night (English Songs only)

3) Encourage your little ones to read ALOUD😲😲. Get those tongue muscles working for the 'Th', 'Sh', 'Wh' sounds.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐂𝐄𝐅𝐑?

CEFR is an international standard used by the government and teachers in school to grade their students' ability in English. There are three grades (from lowest to highest): A, B, C.

For example, an A user has the most basic understanding of English👋 (e.g. ability to greet others), while a C user can use English to study abroad in International Universities ✈️.

The CEFR system is recognised worldwide, so an 'A' user in Malaysia would share similar abilities with an 'A' user in the U.K.

𝐅𝐮𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭: A graduating high school student should reach a 'B' at minimum in Malaysia.
