The Malaysia Population Is Fast Ageing.

In an earlier report released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia, our country is predicted to become an ageing nation by the year 2040 with 15% of its population age 60 and above. Recently, Malaysia is projected to become an ageing nation earlier by 2030 if the Covid-19 pandemic continues as birth-rate is expected to decline following an opinion poll conducted by LPPKN which found that 61% of respondent decided to postpone or re-plan their pregnancy. With the declined in the number of births in the country, Malaysia will experience population shrinkage earlier than expected.

Ageing is a physiological process of irreversible progressive deterioration of healthy functional tissues, tissue repair capacity, resilience and increase risk of diseases.

One of the hallmarks of ageing is cellular senescence. Cellular senescence is the process by which cells irreversibly stop dividing and enter a permanent state of growth arrest without undergoing cell death.

Cellular senescence can be induced by biological factors such as free radicals, unrepaired DNA damage, shortening of telomere or other cellular stresses. In addition, smoking, exposure to pollution, a lack of physical activity, obesity, stress, and an unhealthy diet can increase oxidative burden and the pace of ageing.

12/08/2021

Cellular senescence causes loss of normal cellular functions and is a driving factor of the development of various age-related diseases, including atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, cancer, Alzheimerโ€™s disease, hypertension and type 2 diabetes. The increase in ageing population and age-related diseases poses heavy psychological and economic burdens for patients, their families, and the society.
