Why music theory is important????

I tell you why....

Music theory is the study of how to express yourself with music.Understanding music theory means knowing the language of music ,to express the music– just like we learn language to speak

Music theory is not just learning how to build chords,rhythm, intervals or key signatures. Every single concept in music theory is an idea or foundation for learning how to express your thoughts with music.

How many times do you listen to music and think "why this piece sounds just like a section from another one"? Why and how does that connection happen? When should the music be played softer or louder?

The connection is likely to be a catchy chord sequence, a rhythmic motif or the mood that a particular cadence can create. Being able to understand the theory behind these connections will help you progress as a performer or composer.

For example, when you create your own music, understanding harmony will enable you to create a sound world that is touching, magical, happy or sad, and to communicate these expressive intentions to other performers via a common language.

When you perform music, you use your musical knowledge to interpret the composer’s intentions from the score and realise musical detail and style so that you can bring the music out, along with your own musical ideas and intentions.

Theory can also brings mutual understanding as a language for all types of musical instruments.

Exam,exam,exam...What's included in a Piano Practical exam?

Students are assessed:
1) Performance skills through pieces or songs

2) Technical skills through scales and arpeggios

3) Notation skills through a sight-reading test

4) Listening skills and musical perception through aural tests

How many marks are available?
Total marks in all individual Practical graded exams are 150.

100 marks are required to pass
120 marks are required to pass with merit
130 marks are required to pass with distinction

First part: Three pieces of songs
(each marked out of 30)

Experiencing a selection of good music is an essential part of musical learning.

Second part: Sight-reading
(marked out of 21)

Being able to sight-read enables students to explore new pieces with increased confidence.

Third part: Scales & arpeggios
(marked out of 21)

Students can develop many aspects of technique through scale practice, including familiarity with the physicality of their instrument or voice, articulation, tone and intonation.

Fourth part: Aural tests
(marked out of 18)

Listening is the basis of all good music making. ABRSM aural tests are designed to strengthen the vital connection between listening and performing.
