A client asked me earlier this week how she can show her appreciation to her mother, since they do not share a close bond. Since Mother's Day is coming up, it's a great opportunity to acknowledge the depth of sacrifice and the magnitude of love mothers impart every day. This Mother's Day, let's delve deeper into the emotional landscape that shapes our appreciation for the extraordinary women in our lives.

Mothers often put the needs of their family before their own, seamlessly weaving the fabric of our lives with threads of selflessness and affection. But have we ever paused long enough to truly appreciate these gestures?

Perhaps these questions will help to you, as it did my client, to reflect on your mother's sacrifices and love:

1) What sacrifices has my mother made that I might not have fully acknowledged or understood?
Consider the times your mother may have set aside her personal desires or ambitions for the well-being of the family. Reflecting on this can deepen your appreciation of her selfless nature.

2) How have my mother’s expressions of love and support influenced the person I am today?
Mothers influence us in myriad ways—some subtle, others profound. Think about the values, skills, and passions she has fostered in you.

3) In what ways can I better understand and empathize with my mother's experiences and challenges?
Understanding her journey, struggles, and victories can bring you closer to her, bridging gaps created by age, time, or misunderstanding.

Recognizing a mother's sacrifice and love through reflection is crucial, but expressing that recognition in tangible ways is equally important. I suggest these actionable steps to my client, you can do the same, to show your love and appreciation:

Create Time for Her
Spend quality time with your mother. Do something she loves, whether it’s a hobby, watching a movie, or taking a leisurely walk in the park. The key is to be present without distractions—just you and her, sharing quality time.

Listen Intently
Sometimes, all a mother needs is to feel heard. Engage in a conversation where you ask about her life, her dreams, and her challenges. Listen without planning to respond, without judgment, and without distraction. This can be one of the most meaningful gifts you can give her.

A Personalized Gesture of Appreciation
Write a letter or create a video tribute detailing the things you appreciate about her and the impact she’s had on your life. Highlight specific instances where her strength, wisdom, or compassion shone through. This acknowledgment of her significance in your life will be a cherished keepsake.

This Mother's Day, let's go beyond the conventional flowers and gifts. Engage in a heartfelt exploration of what our mothers mean to us, and show them that their sacrifices haven't gone unnoticed. By asking ourselves tough questions and taking steps to express our gratitude, we not only honor our mothers but also grow in our emotional and relational depth. Let this Mother's Day be a renewal of love, a reaffirmation of bonds, and a true celebration of the women who made us who we are.

Before I dwell into cultivating leadership skills for career advancement, a client of mine recently asked me how to answer the age-old question of “What is your salary expectations?” during interview. This is certainly a good question to ponder, thus I would like to address this first.

What can you do? 🗒️✨

1 ) Redirect the question
a. Try resist giving them your salary expectation. Instead, ask them what’s in their budget.
b. Have you passed the interview? If so, wait for them to offer to you. If not, ask them if there’s a room to negotiate. Let them reveal more about the compensation.
c. Turn it around by asking them, what is the expected compensation for someone in this role?

2 ) Offer a salary range
a. Resist the temptation to give a fixed amount. Also, ensure that minimum salary is non-negotiable, unless you are a new graduate.
b. Do research before the interview. Sites such as Glassdoor, Salary.com and Payscale can give you some insight into the expected salary in your area.
c. When providing a salary range, provide rationale behind it, but indicating the research you have done (site market trends), and the skillsets you possess.

👉Start asking yourself these questions:

1) What is the value I bring to this role, and how does it align with current market trends?
2) How do my career goals and the proposed salary align with my long-term financial planning?
3) What are the non-monetary benefits and opportunities for growth in this role, and how do they factor into my overall compensation expectations?

Finally, do note that salary is just one of the factors in the decision making, your compensation package is negotiable. Consider other factors such as allowances, perks, benefits, stock options, etc in your compensation package, if travel is expected then you can negotiate for more travel perks.

Since my post on advanced personal branding strategies last week, I've received a few personal DMs asking to explore deeper on strategic career planning. Why is a well-defined career plan important roadmap to your success? This is because crafting a strategic career plan that is flexible, goal-oriented, and in harmony with your personal aspirations and the evolving job market. This is particularly important for those looking for career progression or moving into upper management.

What shall you do? 🗒️✨

5-Year Vision: Define your career vision for the next five years. Include the roles you aim to hold, skills you need to acquire, and the impact you wish to make. Write them out clearly in your journal.

Gap Analysis: Conduct a thorough gap analysis between where you are now and where you want to be, identifying skills, knowledge, and experiences you need to acquire. Work on acquiring them over time.

Actionable Steps: Break down your vision into yearly and quarterly goals, outlining specific actions, learning opportunities, and milestones. Make sure milestones comes with mini rewards, thereby ensuring your motivation and momentum is consistently high.

👉To help you better, start asking yourself these questions:

1) What does your ideal career look like in five years, and what are the key milestones to achieve this vision?

2) What gaps exist between your current state and your future career aspirations, and how can you address these?

3) How will you measure progress towards your career goals, and how can you remain adaptable to unforeseen changes or opportunities?
