When should children start learning addition and subtraction?
In the classroom, we often see something that should comes first before that.
At our school, children begin with the foundations:
✔ Arranging numbers to understand sequence
✔ Matching quantities with symbols
✔ Exploring units, tens, and hundreds
As these experiences build,
numbers are no longer just symbols to memorize, but something children can see and truly understand.
From there,
children begin to explore,
breaking numbers apart and putting them back together,
step by step finding their own answers.
When place value is clear,
addition and subtraction are no longer difficult, they come naturally to the child.

Why can’t my child write yet?
Many parents start to worry about this when their child is 3–4 years old.
They start wondering:
Why can’t my child write yet?
Especially when they see other children start doing worksheets or practicing handwriting.
Is my child falling behind?
But in the classroom, we focus on something else.
Not how fast a child writes, but whether they are ready:
👉 Can their hands control movements steadily?
👉 Do their fingers have enough strength?
👉 Are their movements coordinated?
👉 Can they stay focused?
Writing isn’t just moving a pencil.
It requires fine motor skills, coordination, concentration, and confidence.
If these abilities aren’t ready, more practice simply becomes forcing the hand “to write harder”.
That’s why in a Montessori classroom, you’ll often see children:
✔ pouring water
✔ cutting paper
✔ twisting bottle caps
✔ carrying materials
✔ arranging objects
It may not look like writing practice, but it’s preparing the child for writing.
When the child is ready, writing naturally appears.
Sometimes, starting a little later to prepare actually helps protect a child’s long-term love for learning. ❤️

Two little explorers, a bucket of water, a handful of pebbles and a world of discovery. Through simple moments like these, children refine coordination, build concentration, and experience the joy of learning by doing.
In Montessori, even a quiet morning by the water becomes a lesson in observation, friendship, and wonder. 💧🌿

This moment wasn’t planned or arranged — it was simply caught as it unfolded, quietly and beautifully. Our educators guide, observe and support — allowing each child to grow with confidence.
