“Youth Employment and Productive Employment Are the Foundations of Economic Growth”

The G17 University Ambassador Consortium and project team management would like to thank all participants for your active participation in Towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Goal 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth: Productive Employment and Decent Work for Fresh Graduates (Sharing Session & Workshop Collaboration Between University of Malaya, Malaysia and Utsunomiya University, Japan). Special thanks to the speakers, representative for both universities for your time and valuable insights. In fact, we are establishing tools and alternatives for policymaking that nations may use to enhance sustainable development as well as generating an important conversation.

Over the past ten years, youth unemployment has increased relative to the national average, and graduate unemployment has remained a major concern for the country. This includes issues with unequal access to and the quality of higher education, which serve to maintain class segregation. The participants' have had their eyes opened, and they are now more aware of their rights and obligations in achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. By recognising and creating chances to conceive, plan, and execute entrepreneurial initiatives with a positive environmental and social impact, we work together to advocate for productive employment and respectable work for recent graduates.

Based on Cheng, Calvin. 2021. “Pushed to the margins: Unequal impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on Malaysian workers”, the COVID-19 recession has made Malaysia's youth's already difficult job market conditions worse (aged 15-24).

In addition, unemployment increased in 2020 for all age categories. However, Malaysian youths have consistently had higher unemployment rates and have left the labor sector at a rate that is significantly greater than that of other age groups. The epidemic also had a negative impact on various vital industries, including entertainment, markets, retail, hospitality, and tourism. Aside from shortages of goods and services, many businesses had to deal with social isolation and lockdown limitations, which hampered their operations and earnings.

Therefore, this project proposal is focusing on discussing the main obstacles to young people finding adequate employment and employability in responses to COVID-19, as well as offering recommendations, ideas, and proposals as a road map to:

1. Analyze and discussing Malaysia's post-COVID19 labor market conditions, as well as the present framework and government directions for employability of fresh graduates.

2. Discussing the issues and challenges for the proposed recommendations to address the plight of the unemployed youths and young workers.

3. Advocating young workers, as well as all workers, would do well to increase their knowledge of their rights and responsibilities in employment.

4. Due to factors including low average monthly salaries and limited access to collective representation, young people have become more vulnerable in the workplace.

5. This project idea offers a chance for the nation's large number of young workers to contribute to the nation's economic growth and achieve sustainable economic development.

The project proposal will be the platform for the students of University of Malaya, Malaysia and Utsunomiya University, Japan in discussing the main obstacles to young people finding adequate employment and employability in responses to COVID-19, as well as offering recommendations, ideas, and proposals as a road map to support nations on their efforts.

This workshop will be held physically at University of Malaya on the 29th of August 2022 consisting of the students from Bachelor of Engineering & Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning from both universities. (University of Malaya, Malaysia and Utsunomiya University, Japan).
