I am pleased to welcome more than 370 new Clinical Master’s candidates into our postgraduate medical specialist training programmes - a powerful reaffirmation of UM’s national responsibility in shaping the future of medicine, healthcare leadership and human capital for Malaysia and beyond.
I was honoured to be present at this meaningful occasion together with Yang Berbahagia Datuk Dr. Mahathar Abd Wahab, whose presence reflects the deep and enduring strategic partnership between Universiti Malaya and the Ministry of Health Malaysia. This partnership is not merely institutional. It is national in purpose, strategic in direction, and vital to the future resilience of Malaysia’s healthcare system.
Nearly 95 per cent of the candidates admitted this year are Medical Officers from the Ministry of Health Malaysia. This is a strong vote of confidence in Universiti Malaya as one of the nation’s foremost engines for specialist training, clinical excellence and health system transformation.
The world today is facing a health reckoning. Ageing societies, the rise of non-communicable diseases, escalating healthcare costs, antimicrobial resistance, mental health pressures, technological disruption and widening health inequalities are redefining the future of medicine. These are not distant challenges. They are already shaping the lives of patients, families, communities and nations.
This is why the training of medical specialists is no longer a narrow academic exercise. It is a strategic national imperative.
To our new Clinical Master’s candidates, you carry more than personal ambition. You carry the trust of patients, the hopes of families, the future resilience of our healthcare system, and the responsibility to serve humanity through knowledge, integrity and compassion.
Your journey will be demanding. It will test your discipline, endurance, judgement and character. But it is precisely through this demanding journey that true specialists are formed - not only as clinicians, but as leaders, researchers, educators and guardians of public trust.
Through the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya Medical Centre and the wider UM Health ecosystem, Universiti Malaya will continue to strengthen postgraduate medical education, translational research, clinical innovation and strategic collaboration with the Ministry of Health Malaysia.
More importantly, UM will continue to advance talent and human capital for the good of the nation and the world. Every specialist we train, every researcher we nurture, and every healthcare leader we develop is an investment in a healthier, stronger and more humane future.
My appreciation to our health community, our clinicians, educators, researchers and all colleagues and campus community who continue to uphold UM’s leadership in medical education, healthcare service and nation-building.
To all new Clinical Master’s candidates, welcome to Universiti Malaya.
May your journey be defined by excellence, courage, humility and service - and may you help build the future of medicine with knowledge, integrity and humanity.
