The Architectural Student Workshop (ASW) is a flagship annual gathering of architecture students in Malaysia, tracing its origins to the 1980s. Born from a spirit of healthy competition, academic exchange, and collaboration among architecture schools nationwide, ASW evolved into a national platform where students come together to share ideas, challenge perspectives, and celebrate the discipline of architecture.

After four decades of inspiring generations of future architects, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) is proud to host the 38th Architectural Student Workshop 2027. For the first time in its history, the event will be held in Kuching and Samarahan, Sarawak.

Embedding ESD Competencies and VBE in CLOs and Assessment

The Faculty of Built Environment (FBE) successfully organised a workshop on “Embedding ESD Competencies and VBE in CLOs and Assessment” on 13 August 2026.

The session provided practical guidance for lecturers on integrating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) competencies and Values-Based Education (VBE) into academic programmes, particularly through Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) and assessment.

The workshop featured En. Ahmad Abdul Hadi and Pn. Aimi Shahirah Fisol, Lecturers from the Department of Quantity Surveying, who shared their knowledge and practical insights with the participants.

The session served as a valuable platform for academic learning, sharing and discussion towards strengthening meaningful and sustainable learning within the built environment education.

SMM3 Workshop 2026

The Faculty of Built Environment (FBE) successfully hosted the Train-the-Trainer (TTT) SMM3 Workshop on 4–5 August 2026 at Dewan Mutiara, DeTAR PUTRA.

Organised in collaboration with FBE UNIMAS, PROCEL and the Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (QS Division), the two-day workshop brought together 44 participants from consultancy firms, contractors, property developers and higher education institutions.

The workshop provided a valuable platform for participants to strengthen their understanding and practical application of Standard Method of Measurement 3 (SMM3), while encouraging meaningful industry–academia knowledge exchange and professional networking.

A big thank you to all trainers, participants and collaborators for making this workshop a successful and engaging experience!

BENGKEL PENJAJARAN PELAN STRATEGIK FAKULTI ALAM BINA 2026

Fakulti Alam Bina, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) telah mengadakan Bengkel Penjajaran Pelan Strategik Fakulti 2026 sebagai langkah memperkukuh hala tuju fakulti bagi menyokong aspirasi Pelan Strategik UNIMAS 2026–2030. Bengkel ini menjadi platform penting untuk menyelaras perancangan, memperkasakan strategi serta membincangkan inisiatif yang mampu meningkatkan kecemerlangan fakulti dalam bidang akademik, penyelidikan, inovasi dan khidmat kepada masyarakat.

Sepanjang bengkel berlangsung, warga fakulti turut menilai pencapaian semasa, mengenal pasti ruang penambahbaikan serta merangka pelan tindakan yang lebih mampan bagi memastikan setiap sasaran dan KPI dapat dicapai dengan berkesan. Perbincangan yang dijalankan juga memberi penekanan kepada pembangunan program-program baharu yang relevan dengan keperluan industri, agenda pembangunan Sarawak serta landskap pendidikan tinggi yang sentiasa berkembang.

Semoga segala perancangan dan komitmen yang telah disepakati menjadi pemangkin kepada kecemerlangan Fakulti Alam Bina dalam melahirkan graduan yang berdaya saing, memperkukuh impak penyelidikan serta terus menyumbang kepada pembangunan komuniti, negeri dan negara.

Heartiest Congratulations to Our Quantity Surveying Student!

The Faculty of Built Environment, UNIMAS, extends our heartfelt congratulations to Peggy Kho for emerging as the 1st Runner-Up in the BIM Challenge 2026 under the Architectural BIM For Quantification category.

The competition attracted 197 participants from 34 universities and tertiary institutions across Malaysia, including leading institutions such as Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The contest was divided into four categories, bringing together some of the nation's brightest talents in Building Information Modelling (BIM).

Peggy's outstanding achievement in the BIM Quantification category—a core competency of the Quantity Surveying profession, reflects not only her dedication and technical excellence but also the quality of BIM education and training at UNIMAS. This accomplishment demonstrates our commitment to producing graduates who are well-equipped to lead the digital transformation of the construction industry.

As we celebrate Sarawak Day (22 July 2026), this achievement is a meaningful gift to our state and a proud moment for the UNIMAS community. It showcases that Sarawak continues to nurture talented young professionals capable of competing and excelling on the national stage.

Congratulations once again to Peggy on this well-deserved recognition. We also extend our appreciation to the lecturers, mentors, and everyone who contributed to this success. We look forward to seeing even greater achievements in the years ahead.

Universiti Malaysia Sarawak × Universitas Tanjungpura (UNTAN)

The Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), recently engaged with the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Tanjungpura (UNTAN), Kota Pontianak, Indonesia through an Architecture Mobility Programme aimed at strengthening academic collaboration and regional partnerships.

Representing the Faculty of Built Environment, UNIMAS were Dr. Atta Idrawani Zaini (Dean of the Faculty of Built Environment) and Ar. IDr. Mervyn Wong (Year 3 Design Studio Coordinator), accompanied by Year 3 Architecture students. Together, they participated in a series of academic engagements and discussions with their counterparts at UNTAN.

The programme provided a valuable platform for architecture students from both institutions to exchange ideas, share design approaches, and learn from each other's academic and cultural perspectives. Through interactive discussions, collaborative activities, and knowledge-sharing sessions, participants explored architectural practices, sustainable design, and the unique built environments of Malaysia and Indonesia.

Beyond the academic experience, the mobility programme fostered meaningful cross-cultural friendships and encouraged students to broaden their global outlook while enhancing their communication, teamwork, and professional skills.

This engagement reflects the Faculty of Built Environment's commitment to providing international learning opportunities and strengthening strategic partnerships that enrich architectural education, promote innovation, and prepare students to become globally competent future architects.

Sharing Session with Teresa Serrano | University of East London

The Faculty of Built Environment was honoured to host a Sharing Session with Teresa Serrano, Senior Lecturer in Sustainability and Environmental Design at the University of East London.

An ARB-registered Architect and Chartered Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Teresa shared her expertise in sustainable architecture, environmental design, and climate-responsive practices. Drawing from over 15 years of professional and academic experience, she provided valuable insights into how architects can create resilient, sustainable, and people-centred built environments.

The session also explored the importance of integrating sustainability into architectural education and professional practice, inspiring students and staff to embrace innovative approaches that address today's environmental challenges.

The Faculty extends its sincere appreciation to Teresa Serrano for sharing her knowledge, experience, and inspiring perspectives. We look forward to fostering more meaningful international collaborations that enrich architectural education and prepare future architects for a more sustainable future.

External Examiner Curriculum Review (EECR) – Master of Architecture 2026

The Faculty of Built Environment successfully conducted the External Examiner Curriculum Review (EECR) for the Master of Architecture programme as part of its ongoing commitment to academic excellence and continuous quality enhancement.

The EECR serves as an essential quality assurance exercise, providing an independent review of the programme's curriculum, delivery, and learning outcomes. It ensures that the programme continues to meet the professional expectations of the architectural discipline, complies with the standards set by the Board of Architects Malaysia (LAM) and the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), and remains responsive to the evolving needs of the profession.

End Semester Design Review (ESDR) & External Examiner Curriculum Review (EECR) 2026

The Faculty of Built Environment successfully conducted the End Semester Design Review (ESDR) and External Examiner Curriculum Review (EECR) as part of its continuous commitment to academic excellence and quality assurance in architectural education.

The End Semester Design Review (ESDR) serves as an important platform for students to present and defend their final design projects before a panel of experienced architects and industry professionals. Through constructive feedback and critical discussions, the review enhances students' design thinking, technical competency, and professional preparedness.

The review was conducted in accordance with the standards and requirements of the Board of Architects Malaysia (LAM) and the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) to ensure that the curriculum continues to meet the expectations of both the profession and higher education.
