Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, or algorithms: it is about understanding.
– William Paul Thurston. Do you agree?
Let’s test this idea today!
Imagine you’re on a deserted island with a single rope and two uneven candles. Each candle burns completely in exactly 1 hour, but not at a uniform rate. How can you measure 45 minutes using only these two candles and a way to light them?
Answer 👇🏻👇🏻
Answer:
1. Light the first candle from both ends and the second candle from one end simultaneously.
2. The first candle will burn completely in 30 minutes (because it’s burning from both ends).
3. Once the first candle is completely burned, light the other end of the second candle.
4. The remaining half of the second candle will now burn in 15 minutes, giving you a total of 45 minutes.
This problem promotes critical thinking and demonstrates the value of understanding concepts over simply applying formulas.

5 Key Benefits of Learning Abacus 🧮
1️⃣ Concentration🔑
Your child will master basic calculations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using the powerful technique of visualization. This approach not only enhances their ability to concentrate but also equips them with the focus needed to excel academically and tackle specific problems with ease.
2️⃣ Analytical Skills🔑
As your child works through problems, they simultaneously evaluate and choose the best methods and formulas to apply. This significantly boosts their analytical abilities, enabling them to approach real-life challenges from multiple perspectives and find optimal solutions—giving them a head start over their peers.
3️⃣ Memory Retention🔑
With every step of the calculation process, your child is required to recall answers and procedures, which naturally strengthens their memory. The abacus method subtly enhances their ability to retain information, making them more proficient in remembering solutions and processes.
4️⃣ Speed🔑
Through regular practice with the abacus, your child will learn to solve problems mentally at remarkable speeds. Imagine a scenario where a child competes with a calculator; more often than not, the child’s speed will match or even exceed that of the device, demonstrating the incredible efficiency gained through abacus training.
5️⃣ Confidence🔑
Math can be a challenging subject, but with the abacus, your child will conquer their fear of math. They’ll solve problems quickly and accurately, building confidence that extends beyond the classroom. With continued practice, this confidence will grow, empowering them to tackle math problems with assurance, whether in school, at home, or in any situation.

Every child has a song inside, it’s our job to turn up the volume!
It’s a reminder that every child has unique potential and creativity within them, and it’s our responsibility to nurture and amplify it.
Whether in education, parenting, or mentoring, helping children find and express their “song” can lead to their growth and fulfilment.

Here’s a quick little thought/frustration of mine: Please, please, let kindergarteners (and first graders) (and I’d even say second graders!) use half-pencils instead of full pencils.
I say “let” because I keep having to write it into IEPs as an accommodation. I wish it was just the normal!
Children’s hands are 4-5 inches in circumference. Adult hands are 7-8 inches in circumference. And yet adults and very small children alike are expected to use 7.5 inch long pencils.
The equivalent ratio for an adult (using some averages) would be using a 12.5 inch long pencil about as wide as a thick marker! Imagine how unwieldy that would be. Add an eraser to the end of it and now you’ve got even more weight counterbalancing all of the fine motor control you’re trying to do at the pencil end.
And all of that with muscles that are brand-new to fine motor control at all and not very coordinated at it…so imagine, really, trying to write with a 12.5 inch long pencil with your non-dominant hand.
You might very well get referred to me for OT when all you needed in the first place was a writing utensil the right size for your hand, from the beginning (not as a special accommodation)!
You can buy full-size pencils and cut or break them in half; you can buy golf pencils (though those typically don't have erasers); you can buy "Handwriting Without Tears" half-size pencils (though those can be expensive). Whatever you do, it's a solvable problem!

As I watched my 7-year-old play with his friends, I wondered how we can teach our kids to be great friends.
Just like a flashlight needs batteries to shine, friendships need a little boost to stay strong.
We can encourage our kids to be the ones who give that positivity boost when it’s needed.
It can be as simple as giving a compliment, listening without interrupting, or finding other ways to make a friend feel special.
These small acts of kindness recharge friendships and teach our kids what it means to be a good friend.
Here are some ideas to help your child learn about and nurture strong friendships:
1. Model Positive Behavior: Children learn a lot by observing the adults around them. Demonstrate what being a good friend looks like by showing kindness, patience, and understanding in your own relationships.
2. Role-Playing Scenarios: Create simple role-playing games where your child can practice being a good friend. For example, you can act out situations where a friend is feeling sad, and your child can think of ways to cheer them up or offer support.
3. Teach Active Listening: Encourage your child to listen to their friends without interrupting. You can practice this skill at home by having conversations where you take turns speaking and really listening to each other.
4. Discuss Feelings: Help your child recognize and express their own emotions, as well as understand the feelings of others. Discuss how different situations might make someone feel and what they can do to help.
5. Compliments and Encouragement: Teach your child the power of compliments. Simple, genuine compliments can make a friend feel valued. Encourage your child to notice good things about their friends and to express these thoughts.
6. Empathy Building: Read books or watch shows together that focus on friendship and empathy. Discuss the characters' actions and feelings, and ask your child how they might have acted in a similar situation.
7. Problem-Solving Together: If your child encounters conflicts with friends, guide them in finding solutions rather than just stepping in. Ask them questions like, "How do you think your friend feels?" and "What can we do to make things better?"
8. Celebrate Friendships: Encourage your child to do something special for their friends, like making a card, sharing a small gift, or organizing a playdate. Celebrating their friendships reinforces the idea that these relationships are important and worth nurturing.
These strategies can help your child develop strong, positive relationships with their peers, and understanding what it means to be a good friend.

Don’t force your child to be like you!!
Parents should allow their children to develop their own identities, interests, and paths in life. It emphasizes the importance of nurturing a child's individuality rather than imposing the parent's expectations or desires onto them.
This approach fosters a healthier parent-child relationship and supports the child's personal growth and self-discovery.
