Look closely at the edges of objects and you’ll see that they are not as sharp as you might have thought. There’s always that bit of blur. When I’m painting, I always try to show this. Also, how you paint an object’s edge indicates its character. A sphere has no real edge, since it keeps curving away. I paint such a curve with a softer edge. A cube made of a hard material will be better described with a sharper edge. If the edge of an object is strongly lit, I will extend and blur the edge to show light radiating away from it.
