FIELDWORK HIGHLIGHT: YEAR 3 ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE STUDENTS ⛰️
Venue: Ranau, Sabah

Forty enthusiastic Year 3 Environmental Science students, guided by Prof. Dr. Sahibin @ Sahibini Abd Rahim, embarked on a two-day field trip to Ranau, Sabah, as part of their SS32503 Environmental Toxicology course. Over the course of the excursion, the students worked in groups of four to collect various environmental samples—including sediments, water, fish, and bivalve mollusks/snails—using appropriate scientific apparatus at several designated river stations. These stations included the Mamut River, Liwagu River, Lohan River, and a pond located at Kg. Kilimu. Once collected, the samples will be examined in the laboratory to assess their heavy metal levels, electrical conductivity, total suspended solids (TSS), organic matter, and particle size. In addition, in situ measurements were taken at all stations using a YSI meter. For the flowing rivers, flow rates were measured using two approaches: the traditional ping-pong ball method and the application of a current meter.

On the first day, the students visited the Ranau Sports Complex, where they engaged in discussions about the ongoing issues of erosion and pollution in the area. The following day, they were taken to the Poring Recreational Park for a briefing on the site’s unique features, including the natural processes behind the formation of its hot springs. A heartfelt round of applause goes to everyone who contributed to making this fieldwork a success 👏 The knowledge and hands-on experience gained will undoubtedly serve these students well in their future endeavors! 💚🍀

FIELDWORK HIGHLIGHT: YEAR 2 ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE STUDENTS 🌿
Venue: Taman Kinabalu & Polumpung Campsite

Under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Ts. Gs. Dr. Carolyn Melissa Payus, Year 2 Environmental Science students from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), took part in an educational field trip to Taman Kinabalu and Kundasang, Sabah, as part of their Environmental Tourism course (SS21703). The programme commenced with a briefing on Taman Kinabalu’s World Heritage status and its designation as a UNESCO Global Geopark, followed by visits to the Geopark Gallery and Botanical Garden, where students gained meaningful insights into geoconservation, biodiversity, and environmental interpretation. The field visit continued to Timpohon Gate, with stops at Kiau Gap, the Timpohon Information Panel, and Carson Falls, where students experienced the natural landscapes firsthand while gaining insights into conservation practices and sustainable park management.

The programme then proceeded to Polumpung Campsite in Kundasang, where the students were warmly received by the Ketua Kampung, who oversees the tourism site. A meaningful sharing session followed, during which students learned about the history of Polumpung Campsite, its development journey, and the principles of community-based tourism management. The day concluded with a refreshing river session at Sungai Polumpung, allowing students to relax together while appreciating the serene beauty of the campsite before returning from the field trip.

Overall, this immersive fieldwork offered students practical exposure to environmental tourism, community participation, and sustainable destination management, highlighting the significance of safeguarding natural heritage while fostering the empowerment of local communities.

FIELDWORK HIGHLIGHT: YEAR 3 ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE STUDENTS 🌴

Venue: Beaufort Palm Oil Mill (BPOM)

Guided by Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Harry Chong Lye Hin, 40 enthusiastic Year 3 Environmental Science students embarked on a field trip to the Beaufort Palm Oil Mill (BPOM) as part of the SS32103 Pollution Control Technology course. The visit began with a safety briefing, followed by an in-depth explanation of wastewater treatment operations and an interactive Q&A session. The students then toured the site, where they observed firsthand the practical applications of theoretical concepts such as dry cyclones and electrostatic precipitators.

During this trip, the students developed a deeper understanding of the industry’s challenges in managing effluents and observed firsthand how environmental regulations are put into practice. This enriching experience is expected to serve as a valuable foundation for their future endeavors 💫
