๐ฟ๐ EXPLORING NATURE BEYOND THE CLASSROOM: FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS EMBARK ON HANDS-ON LEARNING EXPERIENCE IN NATURE PARK MANAGEMENT & FOREST HYDROLOGY ๐๐ฟ
๐ Nature Park & Recreation Programme, Faculty of Tropical Forestry, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS)

23 โ 25 May 2026
A total of first-year students from the Nature Park and Recreation Programme, Faculty of Tropical Forestry, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), recently participated in an educational field trip under the courses Introduction to Nature Park Management (FN10403) and Forest Hydrology (FN10203).
This field-based experiential learning programme was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kamlisa Uni Kamlun and Dr. Anand Nainar, with the support of Senior Assistant Science Officers Mr. David Kungin and Mr. Rozaidi Hasan. Their expertise and guidance throughout the programme provided students with valuable practical exposure and real-world learning experiences in forest and protected area management.
The programme was designed to provide students with direct exposure to the management of protected areas, natural ecosystems, and hydrological processes within forest environments. It also aimed to bridge theoretical classroom learning with practical field applications through observation, environmental interpretation, and hands-on learning activities.
Throughout the programme, students were exposed to various aspects of:
๐ณ Nature park planning and management
๐ง Forest hydrology and watershed functions
The hands-on activities enabled students to better understand the importance of conserving natural resources, maintaining ecological balance, and managing protected areas sustainably for future generations. Students also gained practical insights into how forests function as important water catchment systems and how hydrological processes contribute to environmental sustainability.
Beyond academic learning, the programme successfully nurtured teamwork, leadership, communication skills, critical thinking, and environmental awareness among students. The exposure is expected to inspire and prepare them as future professionals in tropical forestry, conservation, recreation, and sustainable landscape management.
The Faculty of Tropical Forestry remains committed to strengthening experiential and field-based education in producing holistic graduates equipped with scientific knowledge, practical competencies, and sustainability values aligned with current environmental challenges.
Congratulations to all students, lecturers, and supporting staff involved in making this programme a meaningful and successful learning experience!

14 May 2026: Thirty-nine thirdโyear students from the Forest Plantation and Agroforestry programme (UH6623002 / HG23) at the Faculty of Tropical Forestry (FPT) carried out a field learning visit to the Conservation and Biodiversity Unit (CBU) of Sawit Kinabalu Sdn Bhd in Sungai Pin, Kinabatangan.
The visit, organised for students enrolled in TreeโCropโSoil Interactions and Nutrient Management (FL30203) and Genetics and Plant Breeding (FL30403), aimed to expose them to practical agroforestry techniques, nursery operations and forest seed garden management for plantation tree species and associated crops.
Following an introductory briefing by CBU Manager En. Charis Saliun and his team, the cohort was divided into three smaller groups to rotate through a series of handsโon learning stations. Activities and highlights included:
โ๏ธ Forest seed garden: Students were briefed on the ongoing SPNCA Agroforestry Model Project and observed seed garden management practices.
๐ฑ Preโnursery and nursery: Participants practised transplanting seedlings into trays and learned nursery care procedures.
๐ชต Conservation field (Laran stand): The group visited a stand of Laran (Neolamarckia cadamba), a fastโgrowing evergreen planted in 2000, followed by an extensive questionโandโanswer session.
๐ฆง Mensuli HCV hill and river cruise to Orang Utan Bridge: Students experienced Sawit Kinabaluโs ecoโtourism offerings within the conservation area.
๐ณ Tree planting: The visit concluded with a tree planting exercise, in which every student planted a sapling to contribute directly to local conservation efforts.
The student group was accompanied by Associate Professor Dr. Mohamadu Boyie Jalloh and laboratory assistant Mr. Seli @ Seliman Bin Rajion.
