The single biggest lesson I’ve learned from living in both worlds as a former Air Traffic Controller and a current GA Pilot is aviation safety. It isn't just about following strict procedures—it relies on shared empathy. The safest airspace exists when the pilot and the controller operate as a unified crew. We are teammates working toward the exact same goal: getting everyone home safely!

In hindsight, tackling the issue of the pilot shortage earlier should have been our priority. However, the current crisis is now driving a much-needed transformation. Automation and machine-driven technologies in aviation systems are proving to be the ultimate solutions to bridge this workforce gap. By upgrading to highly automated aeroplanes and flight decks, we can optimize routes, reduce scheduling disruptions, and ensure a more resilient global network. Innovation is no longer just an option—it is the driving force moving our aviation industry forward.

Promoting Aviation & STEM in Sandakan

The Sabah Flying Club successfully launched its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program in Sandakan on 27 June and 28 June 2026. This initiative aimed to promote the aviation industry to younger generations by connecting real-world aviation to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.
Through this program, students discovered diverse career opportunities within the aviation sector, inspiring many to confidently pursue their aviation dreams.

Program Highlights
* Schools Involved: 2 schools from the Sandakan district.
* Total Participants: 42 students alongside their accompanying teachers.
* Flight Operations: 17 successful flight sorties completed over 2 days.
* Commanding Pilots: Captain Albert James and Captain Thomas Estolas.
* Safety & Compliance: 100% adherence to all regulatory rules, safety directives, and civil authority guidelines.

We extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation to everyone who contributed directly or indirectly to making this program a resounding success.
Special recognition goes to our dedicated working committee. Their outstanding commitment, preparation, and tireless efforts ensured that all operations ran smoothly without any untoward incidents.

Building on this success, the Sabah Flying Club will establish this CSR project as an annual signature activity. We look forward to organizing similar educational programs in the years to come to continue inspiring future aviators.
