HISTORIC MILESTONE FOR CARDIOLOGY UNIT, HOSPITAL PAKAR USM!

We proudly mark a new chapter in advanced cardiac intervention β€” the first-ever Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) MitraClip Workshop successfully performed at Hospital Pakar Universiti Sains Malaysia (HPUSM) and the East Coast of Malaysia.

This groundbreaking procedure was conducted with the invaluable assistance of Dr. Narathip Chunhamaneewat from Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Thailand, showcasing international collaboration and excellence in structural heart therapy.

πŸ‘ Congratulations to our dedicated Cardiology USM team for achieving this remarkable feat that brings cutting-edge cardiac care closer to our patients.

πŸ“ Cardiology USM – Leading the way in cardiovascular innovation in the East Coast.

πŸ’“ What is TEER (MitraClip)? πŸ’“

Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER), also known as MitraClip, is a minimally invasive heart procedure used to treat leaking mitral valve β€” a condition where blood flows backward inside the heart (called mitral regurgitation).

Instead of open-heart surgery, doctors insert a small clip through a vein in the leg and guide it to the heart using imaging. The clip helps the mitral valve close more tightly, improving blood flow and reducing symptoms like shortness of breath and fatigue.

πŸ’  It’s safer, quicker to recover, and ideal for patients who are not suitable for surgery.
πŸ’  Helps improve heart function and quality of life.

πŸŽ‰ Successful 7th TAVI Workshop at Hospital Pakar USM! πŸŽ‰

We are delighted to share the success of our 7th Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) Workshop, organized by the Cardiology Unit, Hospital Pakar Universiti Sains Malaysia (HPUSM).

✨ In this workshop, 2 cases were successfully performed, bringing the total to 16 TAVI cases completed under Cardiology USM β€” a significant milestone in advancing cardiac care on the East Coast.

This workshop was guided by Asst. Prof. Dr Ho Kay Woon from the National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS), whose expertise and dedication played a vital role in ensuring the success of the workshop

πŸ’‘ What is TAVI?
TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) is a minimally invasive heart procedure used to replace a narrowed aortic valve that fails to open properly, a condition known as severe aortic stenosis.
Instead of open-heart surgery, doctors insert a new valve through a small tube (catheter) usually via the leg artery. This approach makes recovery faster, especially for elderly patients or those at high surgical risk, while still improving symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain, and fatigue.

πŸ‘ A big thank you to our cardiology team, supporting staff, and collaborators for their commitment and teamwork in making this achievement possible.

πŸ’– Together, we continue to expand access to cutting-edge cardiovascular treatment for our patients.
