Took the opportunity to upskill and relearn about Interpretation.

The interpretation training session was conducted by Akademi Bahasa & Terjemahan, bringing together participants keen to sharpen their craft in this demanding field. The 3-day session was packed with valuable interpretation knowledge, guided by the crème of the industry players, namely Dato' Sa Wai, Dr Kaseh Abu Bakar, Dr Samuel Chew, and Dr Noorazrin Zakaria, each sharing decades of hands-on expertise and real-world insights.

We covered the core techniques of interpretation, from consecutive to simultaneous, along with the discipline, focus, and quick thinking the profession demands.

The icing on the cake was experiencing simultaneous interpretation using the Simultaneous Interpretation System (SIS), stepping into the booth and processing speech in real time. It was both challenging and exhilarating, and gave me a genuine appreciation for what professional interpreters do every day.

Now, I can proudly say that I am a trained interpreter (albeit still gaining experience, which I will definitely build over time)!

Looking forward to rendering my services as an interpreter, and grateful for a training that has opened up a new chapter in my professional journey.

AI and learning

I gave three upper-secondary students a mathematics question to solve. My instruction was simple: Solve it yourself. Don't use AI.

All three came up with different answers, based on their own understanding of the question. Some parts were correct; some were not.

Interestingly, when I pointed out their mistakes, I realised that the problem was not really their content knowledge. They had simply misinterpreted what the question was asking.

And then came the familiar response: “Oh, yaa!!”

They actually knew how to do it. They just did not read the question in the way it needed to be understood.

One student even sent me a “proof” that he was not using AI! 😊

This little exercise made me think.

Even with good content knowledge, students can be overconfident, make assumptions or simply misunderstand what is being asked. And that can eventually mean losing marks for something they are actually capable of doing.

Perhaps this is one of the things we need to think about when we talk about AI and learning.

AI can help students find answers. But can we also make sure that students continue to read, interpret, question and think for themselves?

Sometimes, that little “Oh, yaa!!” is where the real learning begins.

Earlier today, I attended the Town Hall Session on the Accreditation System for Translators, hosted by the Malaysian Translators Association (MTA).

The session was moderated and presented by industry experts who broke down just how important this accreditation system is for the profession, covering where we've been and where it's headed.

It's definitely a long journey, but an attainable one.

After more than 10 years in this industry, I honestly thought I'd seen most of what the profession has to offer. Turns out, there's always another chapter to write. I'm genuinely looking forward to working toward becoming an accredited and certified translator.

Just as valuable was the networking that came with it, reconnecting with fellow translators and hearing their experiences along the way. Conversations like these remind you why this community matters.

I recently completed a translation of a journal article, approximately 9,800 words, from Malay language into English language.

Eight years as a translator, and every document still brings its own set of demands.

I have worked across birth certificates, legal documents, and journal articles. The range is wide; the standard does not change.

This time, the client was a prestigious governing body in Malaysia.

The article examined classical Malay literary manuscripts on statecraft; a subject that sits at the intersection of history, political thought, and literary tradition.

That context shaped every decision: word choices, tenses, syntax, and the pragmatic dimension of the language, ensuring that meaning was not only accurately rendered but appropriately conveyed for an academic readership.

A commission like this is its own kind of recognition.

I look forward to more of the same.
