Healthy Ageing for Women in a Sustainable Silver Economy
What does it mean to grow older well?
That was one of the questions explored at the 65th National Women’s Day Celebration on 5 September 2026 organised by the National Council of Women's Organisation Malaysia.

In her address, YB Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri, Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, highlighted the important role women will play as Malaysia prepares for an ageing society. Women are not simply recipients of support. They are workers, entrepreneurs, innovators, consumers and leaders who will help shape Malaysia’s silver economy.
Emeritus Professor Datuk Norma Mansor, Director of the Social Wellbeing Research Centre (SWRC), Universiti Malaya, brought the conversation to financial security, highlighting the importance of thinking earlier about savings, retirement, financial protection and long term resilience.
For women, career breaks, caregiving and family responsibilities can have a lasting impact on financial security. Ageing well is about more than living longer. It is about having the health, choices and financial security to live those years with dignity and independence.

Malaysia is ageing, care needs are rising, and the question is no longer whether our social care system must change, but whether we are preparing fast enough.

On 10 September 2026, SWRC Universiti Malaya will be bringing together leaders from academia, policy, philanthropy and government for a focused conversation on “The Pressure to Anticipate: Building a Future-Ready Social Care Ecosystem in Malaysia.”

This will not simply be a discussion about ageing. We will examine the bigger questions: Who will provide care? Who will pay for it? What infrastructure must be built now? And what policy choices are needed before demographic pressures become much harder and more expensive to address?

Moderated by Emeritus Prof. Datuk Norma Mansor, the forum brings together Dr. Yasuhiko Matsuda, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Yang Faridah Abdul Aziz, Rashidi Yahya and Datuk Dr. Maziah Che Yusoff.
