A turtle hatchery at Lang Tengah?!
Yes. You read that right.
Last year 2025, Lang Tengah recorded its second-highest number of sea turtle nests in 12 years, with a total of 81 nests — 68 Green Turtle nests and 13 critically endangered Hawksbill Turtle nests.
But with more nests comes greater responsibility.
Previously, we relocated all nests laid on the beach in front of our research station. However, last year alone around 10% of total nests were predated by monitor lizards, including one nest where the entire clutch was lost.
While monitor lizards are a natural part of the island’s ecosystem, we also need to do what we can to protect vulnerable turtle nests and give more hatchlings a better chance of making it to the sea.
This is where a hatchery plays an important role.
With the generous support from Yayasan Kossan and Kossan International & LD Technology, we were able to build a dedicated hatchery and improve our hatching success rate by providing a safer place for relocated nests to incubate until the hatchlings are ready to begin their journey to the ocean.
