Industrial Visit to Top Glove!

Our AIChE-UTP-SC Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS Student Chapter members recently had an invaluable opportunity to visit Top Glove, gaining first-hand exposure to the industry and learning beyond the classroom while exploring potential internship opportunities.

A special thank you to Mr. MUHAMMAD FAKHRUL ARIFFIN AMINUR RASHID (Chemical Engineering, UTP Class of 2021) for taking the time to share his inspiring journey—from university life and internships to successfully transitioning into the professional world. His insights on the importance of continuous learning, adaptability, and personal development resonated strongly with our students. It is always motivating to hear from an alumnus who once walked the same path and is now making meaningful contributions to the industry.

Throughout the visit, our students were highly engaged, asking thoughtful questions and actively participating in the discussions. This experience provided them with valuable industry insights, a better understanding of workplace expectations, and greater motivation as they prepare for their future careers.

We sincerely thank Top Glove for the warm hospitality and for providing such a meaningful learning experience. We also extend our appreciation to Mr. Fakhrul for his time, guidance, and encouragement. We look forward to strengthening the collaboration between academia and industry to prepare the next generation of chemical engineers.

The Chemical Engineering Department, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) has organized an industrial visit to Petron Malaysia Refining & Marketing Bhd (PME Plant), Lumut on 10 July 2026 for our final-year undergraduate students.

The visit involved students enrolled in:

* Reaction Engineering II (RE II) & Plant Design Project I (PDP I)
* Chemical Engineering Laboratory III (CE Lab III)
* Materials Science for Chemical Engineering (MSCE)

The industrial visit provided students with valuable first-hand exposure to the production of Palm Oil Methyl Ester (PME) for biodiesel, while enhancing their understanding of industrial operations, process safety, operational excellence, and sustainable manufacturing practices.

Students also gained insights into PETRON’s commitment to quality and sustainability through its Halal-certified glycerine production and Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification, demonstrating how engineering excellence and responsible manufacturing go hand in hand.

A highlight of the visit was reconnecting with our UTP alumnus, Mr. NUR ZAILIE ALI HASSAN, who warmly welcomed the delegation. The department extends its sincere appreciation to the management and staff of PETRON PME Plant for their exceptional hospitality, informative technical sharing, and guided plant tour.

We are also delighted to learn that PETRON PME Plant welcomes opportunities for student internships, industrial visits, guest lectures, collaborative research, and other academia–industry initiatives. The Chemical Engineering Department looks forward to strengthening this partnership to create more meaningful learning experiences and collaborative opportunities for our students and faculty.

We are incredibly proud to share that Loh Jia Cheng, a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering student at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), has been selected for the prestigious CERN Summer Student Programme (CSSP) 2026 in Geneva, Switzerland!

Since 2012, the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Malaysia (MOSTI) have served as the official nomination bodies to identify and nominate outstanding Malaysian students for this prestigious programme, strengthening Malaysia’s participation in the global scientific community.

Supervised by Associate Professor Ir. Ts. Dr. Serene Lock Sow Mun, Jia Cheng’s research at UTP focuses on the atomistic elucidation of ionic liquid mixed matrix membranes for advanced gas separation applications through molecular simulation, computational modelling, and materials design approaches.

During his attachment at CERN, Jia Cheng will join the Gas Team unit, applying his expertise in computational modelling to evaluate advanced membrane materials for greenhouse gas and fluorinated gas purification. This invaluable opportunity will expose him to a world-class scientific environment, enabling collaboration with leading researchers, strengthening his research capabilities, and broadening his perspectives in addressing global sustainability challenges.

Throughout his postgraduate journey at UTP, Jia Cheng has demonstrated strong dedication to research excellence, with achievements including a Q1 journal publication, a filed copyright, recognition at the UTP Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition, and contributions at national and international conferences.

His selection for CSSP 2026 is a testament to his perseverance, research potential, and commitment to scientific advancement. This achievement also highlights UTP’s continuous commitment to nurturing future-ready researchers by providing world-class research facilities, advanced computational resources, and an enabling ecosystem for innovation and interdisciplinary discovery.

We wish Jia Cheng every success in his research journey at CERN and look forward to witnessing his contributions to the global scientific community!
