On 23 April 2026, Dr. Wong Leong Sing led 14 postgraduate students from the Advanced Concrete Technology course under the Master in Structural Engineering program, College of Graduate Studies, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), on an academic–industry site visit to an active construction project managed by George Kent (Malaysia) Berhad. Conducted under the supervision of the Project Manager, Ir. Mohd Shahril Mat Radhi, the visit took place at the Kwasa Damansara Township Development, Sungai Buloh, Selangor, involving the construction, testing, and commissioning of critical infrastructure facilities, including a suction tank, pump house, water reservoir, 11 kV switching station, and associated utility works for Kwasa Land Sdn. Bhd..

This visit provided a strong theory-to-practice and experiential learning platform, enabling students to translate advanced classroom concepts into real engineering applications. Through direct exposure to concrete pile installation, mat foundation systems, reinforcement detailing, formwork arrangements, and live concreting operations, students gained valuable insights into how advanced concrete technology supports the safety, durability, and performance of critical infrastructure systems.

The inclusion of the 11 kV switching station and water pumping facilities further strengthened students’ understanding of how structural engineering interfaces with energy and utility infrastructure. These systems are essential for reliable power distribution and water supply within urban developments, highlighting the crucial role of durable concrete structures and foundation systems in supporting long-term infrastructure resilience and uninterrupted utility operations.

The visit also reinforced experiential learning through industry engagement, exposing students to real-world challenges such as construction sequencing, site logistics, quality control, safety compliance, and infrastructure performance requirements. Interaction with practicing engineers significantly enhanced the students’ professional competency, critical thinking, and readiness for complex engineering practice.

Importantly, this initiative strongly aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, by promoting resilient infrastructure, sustainable industrial development, and academic–industry collaboration. It reflects the vital role of UNITEN in preparing future engineers to contribute meaningfully to sustainable national and energy-supporting infrastructure development.

The trip was supported by the UNITEN Student Development Implementation Committee (USDIC) fund, the contribution of which made this impactful academic and professional learning experience possible.
