Hey everyone! I am Cheong .

Like so many of us, my childhood dream was to become a cool filmmaker. Mind you, I also fancied myself as a fast-talking lawyer. Back then, I absolutely loved performing. I wanted to be just like those brave, larger-than-life characters on the big screen, so I started entering storytelling competitions, singing contests, and poetry recitals. Over time, I realised something about myself: I thrived on the praise and the applause. But when the pandemic hit, my anxious self felt like I was slowly crawling towards the end of the road. With a compromised immune system, exam scores stuck in the teens, and crying myself to sleep night after night, I ended up spiralling into a dark place for three long years.

Time flew by, and suddenly I was in Form 4. I couldn't bear the thought of seeing my mum frown every time she checked my exam papers anymore. I didn't want to hear my dad saying, "Just focus on your studies, we work incredibly hard to earn this money." Most of all, I didn't want the flowers and applause of my childhood to turn into mockery and disappointment. So, I did everything I could to patch up my basics, revising them over and over to get myself back on track. Although my final report card didn't look dazzling with straight A's, the massive weight in my heart finally crumbled into dust. Tears streamed down my face, but a smile broke out on my mum's.

Like many of you, I grew up in a fairly "traditional" household where university meant studying to be a doctor, a lawyer, or a teacher. Fortunately, I’ve got a mum who loves me to bits—even if I had to "sweet-talk" her into it a little! I wanted to chase my childhood dream. She might not completely get it, but she certainly can't stop me! Along this winding academic journey, I stumbled upon the Department of Drama and Visuals at New Era University College. And just like that, I packed my bags, left my hometown, and moved to Kajang. People always have two immediate impressions of this course: the first is that it’s insanely busy, and the second is... well, exactly the same, haha!

True enough, once semester started, I quickly slid into what everyone describes as a "busy enough to kill you" lifestyle. Right from the word go, my first performance class gave me a proper reality check about how brutal the real world can be. In the space of just a few seconds, we were forced to confront our lifelong insecurities, self-doubt, and fear of making mistakes. We even had to unconditionally rip open our old emotional wounds. At first, I really couldn't handle such a massive, sudden shift. But one piece of advice from my lecturer got me through my own personal hurdle: "The Department of Drama and Visuals is exactly the place for you to make mistakes. If you don't take that leap and try now, nobody in the real world is going to bother helping you when you mess up." Clutching onto those words, I pushed through every presentation, shoot, and my very first rehearsal.

During my time here, I’ve encountered some incredibly distinct lecturers. Our Head of Department, Mr. Ho, is bursting with creativity; he takes every event and project so seriously and refuses to give up on any possibility until the absolute last second. Ms. Wong is strict, but she always guides us to dig deep into our inner selves, helping our characters develop more layers and flexibility. Ms. Leong is brilliant at blending philosophy with film, turning theoretical lectures into something lively, engaging, and genuinely thought-provoking. Then there’s Mr. Tey, whose classes are practical and full of humour; he constantly cracks dad jokes to liven up the room, making learning feel relaxed and fun.

These lecturers haven't just taught me professional knowledge; they’ve given me so much practical experience and helped me grow on my creative journey. In our coursework, we’re constantly involved in filming, acting, event planning, and creative design, which has taught me how to turn abstract ideas into actual, tangible work. Beyond the classroom, I’ve had the chance to help organise and execute departmental events, picking up teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills along the way. Under their guidance, I've gradually learned how to observe life, think creatively, and express myself, while gaining a proper understanding of the professionalism behind film and theatre production. Even though it's filled with challenges and pressure, every completed project, hosted event, or moment stepping onto the stage brings a massive sense of growth and achievement. This journey has not only boosted my skills but also made me more confident, proactive, and clearer about where I want to go in the future.

This place made me realise that there isn't just one conventional way to live your life. The world will always need people to express the unspoken emotions that others bottle up—and that’s why we’re here. Studying here makes you more sensitive, more perceptive, and better at truly feeling life. When an event wraps up, we don’t just remember the exhaustion; instead, we reflect on the human connections, the atmosphere of the venue, the audience's reactions during the performance, our chemistry with the team, and the actual meaning behind all that hustle. That kind of perceptiveness is hard to come by in everyday life.

Let’s be real: a lot of people think a Diploma in Performing Arts has no future because it doesn’t offer a textbook answer or a stable, predictable career path. But honestly? That’s exactly why it’s so special. It forces us to actually go out there and find our own voice, and ultimately, our own way of living.

“Pitching(提案提报)”是导演踏入战场的第一步。
