📚 What is H-Index? A Simple Guide for Library Science Students and Researchers

Have you ever heard someone say, “This researcher has an H-index of 20”? What does that actually mean?

The H-index is a simple way to measure both the quality and impact of a researcher’s work.

🔹 How does it work?

A researcher has an H-index of 10 if they have 10 research papers, and each of those papers has been cited at least 10 times by other researchers.

For example:

✅ 5 papers cited 5 times each = H-index 5

✅ 15 papers cited 15 times each = H-index 15

🔹 Why is the H-index important?

✔ Shows how influential a researcher is.

✔ Helps universities and institutions evaluate research performance.

✔ Useful for promotions, grants, and academic recognition.

✔ Combines both productivity (number of papers) and impact (citations).

🔹 Can H-index be used for journals?

The H-index is mainly used for authors and researchers, but journals can also have an H-index based on how often their published articles are cited.

🔹 Where can you check the H-index?

You can find it on:

• Google Scholar

• SCOPUS

• Web of Science (WOS)
