School of Computer Science Welcomes New Cohort 2025
The University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) campus was buzzing with excitement as the School of Computer Science held its induction event for the new cohort of first-year undergraduate students. The comprehensive session set an inspiring tone, offering a warm welcome alongside a practical roadmap for academic success, highlighting the university's global prestige, extensive support networks, and vibrant student community.
The event was led by Professor Tomas Maul, who opened by assuring the new students that they were in "good hands." He pointed to the University of Nottingham's position as a top 100 institution in the QS World University Rankings and its strong reputation for graduate employability.
Showcasing the school's global reach, Head of School, Professor Chen ZhiYuan addressed the students live from her business trip in China. She highlighted the school's active international engagement, including the signing of new Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with various universities from China. Prof. Chen also noted that students would see her in the classroom for the second-year software engineering group project and the final-year Machine Learning module.
Prof. Tomas then introduced the diverse and talented team of lecturers, encouraging students to engage with them actively throughout their studies.
The induction provided students with invaluable practical advice to help them succeed. Prof. Tomas explained the course structure and the critical role of the credit system, guiding students effectively manage their workload across lectures, labs, and tutorials. He explained the processes for reassessment and progression, giving students a transparent understanding of the academic regulations from day one.
A core message throughout the event was that students are fully supported during their time at the university. "You are not alone," Prof. Tomas emphasised, as he detailed the extensive support system. He introduced the roles of personal tutors as a first point of contact for any issues, alongside module convenors, the senior tutor, and the Head of School. He also highlighted the university's professional Counselling and Careers Advisory services.
Closing the session, Prof. Tomas encouraged students to cultivate a healthy work/life balance, take advantage of university facilities, and most importantly, "have fun". The comprehensive induction left students feeling welcomed, informed, and well-equipped to embark on their promising journey into the world of computer science at a world-class institution.
Welcome new students!

As the world comes to grips with the rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence, there is an increasing emphasis on applying Computer Science innovations across other leading domains. The emergence of powerful tools has empowered those with a background in Computer Science to collaborate more effectively with experts from diverse fields, leading to insightful and impactful interdisciplinary initiatives.
Ms Mariah Binti Azmir Faizal, an incoming Year 1 Computer Science student collaborated recently with her fellow peers from the School of Pharmacy to form the winning Team called Next Wave for the AstraZeneca Project iDEA 2025 Challenge. Their campaign, " " focused on raising awareness and building support networks for Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), a rare disease that is often overlooked.
Given her expertise in graphics and design, Mariah contributed to handling the overall branding, social media content, campaign collaterals as well as her team’s presentation materials. She also developed the RareLink Map, an online tool to help connect rare disease patients and caregivers across Malaysia. Additionally, she creatively designed and created the team’s campaigns’ TikTok Filter, which was aimed at raising early awareness of NF1 by simulating café-au-lait spots (which is one of the first signs of the condition).
With their win among more than 160 teams nationwide, Mariah and her fellow peers will now proceed to the Regional Finals on September 11th where they will compete against other top teams from across Asia.
We at the School of Computer Science congratulate Mariah and her fellow peers on their success, thus far and wish them all the very best as they represent Malaysia on the global stage!😀👍💯
