Why Healthcare Assistants Are So Important
- Contributed by Allan Lee, COO, CSM Academy International.

Over the years, I have had the opportunity to meet many Healthcare Assistants working across hospitals, nursing homes, and community care settings in Singapore. While doctors and nurses often receive much of the public recognition, I believe Healthcare Assistants are the unsung heroes of our healthcare system.

Healthcare Assistants are often the first to notice when a patient is having a difficult day. They are the ones helping patients with their meals, mobility, personal hygiene, and daily activities. More importantly, they are often the ones spending the most time with patients, offering a listening ear, a smile, or simply reassuring someone who may be feeling anxious or alone.

As Singapore's population continues to age, the demand for quality healthcare and eldercare services is growing rapidly. This is where Healthcare Assistants become even more important. They support nurses and healthcare professionals by taking care of essential daily needs, allowing the clinical team to focus on medical treatment and specialised care.

What many people do not realise is that being a Healthcare Assistant is not just about completing tasks. It requires patience, compassion, empathy, and a genuine desire to care for others. Whether it is assisting an elderly resident with mobility, comforting a patient who misses their family, or simply having a conversation that brightens someone's day, these small actions can have a huge impact.

The COVID-19 pandemic reminded us how critical every healthcare worker is. Healthcare Assistants stood shoulder to shoulder with the rest of the healthcare team, continuing to care for patients despite the challenges and uncertainties.

In my view, healthcare is not only about medicine and treatment. It is about people caring for people. Healthcare Assistants embody this spirit every day through their dedication, kindness, and commitment to serving others.

As we continue to strengthen Singapore's healthcare system, let us also recognise and appreciate the Healthcare Assistants who work tirelessly behind the scenes. Their contribution is invaluable, and our healthcare system would not function effectively without them.

Mental Health Protection 2026: Why Singapore Workplaces Must Do More
- by Allan Lee, Chief Operating Officer

Mental health protection in the workplace is no longer just a “nice to have” topic in Singapore. In 2026, it has become something every employer, manager, and employee must take seriously. Behind every deadline, KPI, and performance review is a human being trying to cope with stress, uncertainty, financial pressure, and personal struggles.

When I say “Human Being”, I am referring to everyone – the Employer & Employees.

Many working adults today are facing silent burnout. Some are afraid to speak up because they worry they may be judged as weak, uncommitted, or unable to cope. Others continue working while emotionally exhausted because they feel they have no choice. In Singapore’s fast-paced work culture, this has become increasingly common.

Mental health protection is not simply about organising wellness talks once a year or placing motivational posters in the office. It starts from building a healthy work culture. Employees should feel psychologically safe to ask for help without fear of embarrassment or punishment.

Employer & Managers need to learn how to identify warning signs such as withdrawal, sudden mood changes, constant fatigue, or declining work performance. It is all about being Fair to everyone in my view.

At the same time, employees themselves must learn how to protect their own mental well-being. Taking breaks, setting boundaries, speaking to trusted colleagues, and seeking professional support early are important steps. Mental resilience does not mean forcing yourself to suffer silently.

Singapore has made positive progress in discussing mental health openly, but workplaces still have room to improve. A mentally healthy workforce is not only beneficial for productivity — it also creates stronger teamwork, better morale, and healthier individuals. In the long run, this actually contributes to the organization's longevity.

In 2026, mental health protection should not be treated as an afterthought. It should be part of every organisation’s responsibility and every employee’s right.
