The Year 2025: The Rise of Agentic AI
As we move through 2025, it's becoming increasingly clear that this year will be remembered as the "Year of Agentic AI." This term refers to the rapid development of artificial intelligence systems that not only perform tasks but also make autonomous decisions, evolving into self-directing agents capable of carrying out a wide range of functions without direct human intervention.

Based on my personal research and observations, we’re entering an era where AI technology will begin to significantly impact the world, particularly in ways that are already being demonstrated by AI companies in the US and China. These countries, which are at the forefront of AI development, are set to unleash some truly groundbreaking innovations this year. The recent launch of the R1 Deepseek model has already sent shockwaves through the AI community. While its capabilities and features are impressive and have rightfully garnered praise, I believe we need to take a step back and view this from a broader perspective.

The Deepseek Model: A Game-Changer?
The R1 Deepseek model, which was recently unveiled, is a sophisticated AI system that has pushed the boundaries of what we thought was possible. Its ability to understand and process complex data at scale, along with its advanced decision-making features, is unlike anything we’ve seen before. This level of sophistication might seem like a huge leap, but if we’re being honest, it shouldn’t come as a complete surprise.

The technology behind Deepseek represents just the tip of the iceberg. Companies, particularly in China, have been quietly working on similar AI systems for years. These systems are not just designed for narrow, task-specific purposes, but are evolving into powerful, self-sufficient agents that can learn from their environment, adapt to changing conditions, and even act with a certain degree of autonomy.

A Wake-Up Call for the AI Industry
In many ways, the release of Deepseek serves as a wake-up call to both AI innovators and regulators around the world. For too long, many in the industry have been focused on making incremental improvements to existing models or creating systems that are constrained by very specific parameters. What Deepseek represents is a shift away from this traditional approach—toward more dynamic, adaptable, and potentially disruptive AI.

The race to develop “agentic” AI systems—AI that can independently make decisions and optimize for long-term goals—has now entered its most competitive phase. It’s a battle to build the most powerful and capable AI agents, which will not only have massive economic implications but also reshape global power dynamics.

The Good and the Bad: What’s at Stake?
On one hand, this competition will undoubtedly lead to incredible advancements in technology, bringing about profound benefits for humanity. We could see breakthroughs in healthcare, environmental sustainability, and economic efficiency—areas where AI agents could work autonomously to solve problems on a massive scale. AI’s potential to optimize systems, enhance productivity, and create new innovations will have an undeniable positive impact on the global economy.

However, there is a darker side to this rapid development. The more powerful and autonomous AI becomes, the greater the risk it poses. These systems will be able to operate without direct human oversight, which raises serious ethical and safety concerns. If these AI agents are left unchecked, they could make decisions that harm individuals, society, or even the environment. The AI “arms race” we’re witnessing could ultimately lead to the development of systems that prioritize efficiency or competitive advantage over human well-being.

Furthermore, the economic consequences could be destabilizing. As AI takes over more aspects of work and industry, there will be large-scale job displacement. Many people could find themselves out of work as autonomous agents handle everything from customer service to complex data analysis. The social implications of widespread automation could be just as significant as the technological ones, leading to greater inequality and tension between those who control these powerful AI systems and those who don’t.

What Does the Future Hold?
Looking ahead, the question remains: What will the future of AI look like in a world where agentic AI systems dominate? As AI continues to evolve and become more autonomous, we will have to grapple with the ethical, economic, and political challenges that come with it. Will we have the governance structures in place to ensure these systems are used responsibly? Or will we find ourselves in a world where a handful of entities control increasingly powerful AI agents, with little oversight?

As we move deeper into 2025 and beyond, these questions will become more pressing. It’s clear that the AI industry is on the brink of a revolution, one that could radically alter the fabric of our societies. The choices we make today about how to develop, regulate, and control AI will determine the trajectory of this technology for years to come.

Ultimately, while the race to develop agentic AI has the potential to bring about incredible benefits, it also carries substantial risks. We must proceed cautiously, ensuring that the rapid progress in AI is matched by thoughtful consideration of its broader impacts on humanity. The year 2025 is only the beginning of what promises to be a defining chapter in the history of artificial intelligence. Whether this chapter will be one of progress or peril depends largely on how we navigate the complex challenges ahead.
