KRAF HIBISCUS FEATURED IN THE STAR!

We are delighted to share that Kraf Hibiscus, a community-based upcycling initiative led by our staff member, Dr. Norfhairna Baharulrazi, has been featured in The Star.

The project reflects how innovation, sustainability and community engagement can come together to create meaningful impact beyond the university.

With support from Majlis Bandaraya Iskandar Puteri (MBIP) through the Iskandar Puteri Rendah Karbon (IPRK) 5.0 initiative, Kraf Hibiscus has achieved several important milestones:

♻️ Over 4,000 kg of fabric waste diverted from landfill in just 2 months
🧡 Upcycled textile products created from discarded fabrics
🀝 Local community members, including housewives and senior citizens, empowered with opportunities to develop skills and generate income
🌱 Contributing to low-carbon initiatives and the circular economy at the community level

What makes this initiative especially meaningful is that the impact goes beyond waste reduction. Fabric that might otherwise be discarded is given a second life, while skills, creativity and economic opportunities are created within the community.

The journey continues.
The positive impact of Kraf Hibiscus has also opened the door to the next phase of the initiative. Recognising the potential of the project to further strengthen the circular economy at the community level, MBIP has continued its support through IPRK 6.0, with a grant of RM40,000.

This new support will allow the team to further develop Kraf Hibiscus and explore more opportunities to turn textile waste into value while strengthening community participation and sustainable income generation.

We are proud to see the work of our staff making a real difference in the community and contributing towards a more sustainable future.

From waste to value, from community to impact.
