⚠️马来西亚学生的三大英文写作迷思：
（1） 我必须写非常‘高级’且‘艰深’的词汇才能拿高分”
真相：
很多学生直接把近义词 (synonyms) 背起来然后使用在作文里但是完全不理解这些字的真正用法。有些字是贬义词但是学生却把它们当作褒义词在用。 也有一些学生不知道一般上哪些动词或形容词和这些词配搭使用 （Collocations）结果反而因为使用不当而丢分。所以“用对词汇”比“盲目地用艰深的词汇”更能帮助你拿高分。

（2）“我的作文必须非常与众不同才能拿A”
真相：
英文的议论文或说明文的最重要的元素是’内容’与’组织性’。一篇非常与众不同但结构松散或内容空洞的文章是无法帮你拿高分的。况且，统考不是作文比赛，不是只有前三名的学生才能拿A。事实上，2017年有超过1600位学生在高中统考英文拿A。所以你不需要是最顶尖的那几个学生，你只需要写出充实的内容和严谨的结构就可能拿A。有些学生盲目地追求写出一篇非常出众的文章但却因能力不足反而因此失去拿A的机会。

（3）“写得越多拿高分的机率越高”
真相：
大部分的学生的英文写作能力都不强。写得越长只会越加曝露你的缺点让你丢分而已。

⚠️3 Common Writing Myths among Malaysian students:
(1) “In order to score a good mark for my writing, I need to use bombastic big words”
Fact:
This is incorrect. If you do not know the real meanings and usage of the words, you may misuse them and confuse the examiners. As a result, you may lose marks due to the confusion and ambiguity caused.
e.g. “infamous” means “famous for something bad” but some students misuse it as “not famous” .

(2) “I need to write a very special or uniquely structured essay in order to outperform other test takers”
Fact:
Content and organisation are the key elements of a well-written formal essay. If you write a specially structured but unorganized essay, you will get a very low mark for it.

(3) “I have to write a long essay to get a high mark in a writing test.”
Fact:
Most students are weak in expressing themselves in written English. So, you will run a high risk exposing your weaknesses to the examiners when you write a lengthy essay. It is more likely for you to write an essay of loose structure too.

Actually, most students encounter problems writing a good essay. What they need is an experienced tutor who is able to steer them in the right direction so that their efforts will not go down the drain.
