Learners must understand how the English language works so that they can speak and write proficiently

I use the Structural Approach which is based on the study of Traditional Grammar. In the Structural Approach to learn English, a learner must understand English sentence structures to communicate effectively. The Structural Approach is suitable for non-native speakers who intend to speak and write English clearly, correctly and confidently. The learning of Traditional Grammar is emphasised in my t

WHY STRUCTURED LEARNING PRODUCES BETTER ENGLISH OUTCOMES

Many parents assume that improvement in the English language happens automatically with exposure. But real progress happens when students are trained logically and systematically.

One of my Year 4 students from an international school initially needed more time to process and understand English concepts. Instead of rushing the learning process, we focused on something more important:

✔︎ Consistent practice
✔︎ Structured exercises
✔︎ Clear explanations
✔︎ Discipline and repetition
✔︎ Building confidence step by step

Over time, the transformation became visible not only during lessons but also in the school report itself.

His latest report showed strong performance in Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing and Spelling.

Most importantly, he developed the confidence to use the English language more independently.

His mother recently shared something meaningful with me: “Your explanations, guidance and patience are admirable.”

Parents eventually understand that structure, consistency and practice are essential in language learning.

The Structural Approach to learn English is not about shortcuts. It is about helping learners to understand how the English language really works so that they can speak and write clearly, correctly and confidently.

I could speak in English but I couldn’t write in English.

When I started my UK Diploma after SPM, I struggled with exams, essays and reports. I didn’t understand how to write in Standard English.

Like many Malaysians, I was taught to communicate but not to understand how the language really works.

It took me 10 years to figure it out on my own.
Today, I teach students and working adults how the English language really works, so they can write clearly, confidently and correctly.

If you can speak but still struggle to write, the problem is not you. It’s how the English language was taught.

IF IT WORKED BEFORE, WHY DID WE ABANDON IT?

Before 1970, English was taught very differently.
And it worked.

Students were able to construct sentences accurately, write clearly and speak with confidence because they were taught using a structured approach.

Today, many learners struggle despite years of learning.
Why? The focus has shifted away from structure.

English is not just about words. It has sentence structures. It has sentence-patterns.

If one's approach doesn’t follow a structure, one's results won’t improve.

Maybe it’s time to return to what actually works.
Stop memorising. Start understanding the structure.

If you’ve been struggling with English despite years of learning,
maybe it’s time to change your approach.

Start with the structure.

Ramai pelajar fikir mereka lemah dalam Bahasa Inggeris sebab kurang vocabulary.

Tapi realitinya…
Anda mungkin tahu banyak perkataan,
namun masih tidak boleh menulis dengan tepat atau bercakap dengan yakin.

Kenapa?
Kerana anda tidak faham struktur ayat.
Bahasa Inggeris bukan sekadar hafalan.
Ia adalah sistem yang perlu difahami.
Bila anda faham struktur:
✔ Ayat jadi tepat
✔ Penulisan lebih jelas

THE QUARTERLY TRAINING MYTH THAT’S WEAKENING CORPORATE COMMUNICATION

“We will hold English training every quarter.”

This was the conclusion after a discussion on English and Communication training for an academy.

At first glance, it sounds structured. Planned. Organised.

But let’s examine it more critically.

Why quarterly? Why not monthly or even continuously embedded into the workplace?

In most organisations, English is not a “seasonal skill.”
It is used daily:

* In emails that shape decisions
* In meetings that influence outcomes
* In presentations that define credibility

Yet, training is often treated like a compliance activity. It is scheduled, attended and then forgotten.

Here’s the uncomfortable question:

Are organisations unintentionally signalling that functional and broken English is acceptable?

That signal is the hidden message when development is infrequent.

THE REAL COST OF “QUARTERLY ENGLISH”:

When training happens once every three months:

* Employees revert to old habits within weeks
* Errors fossilise into communication patterns
* Confidence drops, especially in high-stakes situations

This creates a cycle: Train → Forget → Repeat

No real transformation.

WHY THIS HAPPENS:

Most companies do value English.

But they often:

* Underestimate the complexity of learning it
* Overestimate the impact of short-term training
* Treat language as a support skill and not a core capability

WHAT SHOULD CHANGE:

If proficiency in English among employees truly matters in your organisation, then the approach must shift:

1. From Event-Based to System-Based Learning
Training should not be an isolated workshop. It should be reinforced weekly.

2. From Exposure to Structure
Employees don’t just need practice. They need to understand how English actually works.

3. From Occasional to Continuous Correction
Real improvement happens through consistent feedback, not quarterly refreshers.

THE STRATEGIC PERSPECTIVE:

Proficiency in English is not about perfection in the study of grammar alone.

It is about:

* Clarity of thought
* Precision in communication
* Authority in delivery

In a corporate environment, this directly affects:

* Leadership presence
* Decision-making efficiency
* Client perception

FINAL THOUGHT:

If communication drives performance, then English is not a “quarterly skill.”

It is a daily operational tool. And like any critical tool, it must be sharpened continuously.

Question for HR leaders and decision-makers:

Are you training for attendance or are you training for transformation?

THE MISSING FOUNDATION IN MALAYSIAN CORPORATE TRAINING: BASIC ENGLISH

There is a growing demand for Business Communication and Business English training in Malaysia.

But here is the reality: many employees are still struggling with Basic English.

If employees cannot construct clear and correct English sentences, how can they be expected to write effective emails, reports or present ideas confidently?

Even with the AI tools available today, one critical question remains:
👉 Can AI speak for you in real-life situations?
The truth is simple. Business English is just Standard English used in the business environment. Without a strong foundation, advanced training will not deliver results.

👉 Fix employees’ Basic English. Then, everything else will make sense.

THIS MISTAKE IN GRAMMAR IS COSTING YOUR MUET MARKS

One mistake in grammar is quietly destroying MUET essays.

Sentence Fragments.

Many candidates write incomplete sentences without realising it, and so they lose marks in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET).

If your sentences are incomplete, your ideas become unclear.

And unclear writing = lower band score.

MOST MALAYSIANS ARE NOT READY FOR BUSINESS ENGLISH — AND HERE’S WHY

Business English training is everywhere today. But here is the uncomfortable truth: Most Malaysians still struggle with Basic English.

There is a lot of buzz about Business Communication and Business English programmes in the market today. Are these training programmes really relevant to most Malaysians who lack the knowledge of Basic English?

When MOST Malaysians still struggle to speak and write in Standard English, can they understand how to write emails, business letters and reports clearly, correctly and confidently? A person who can hardly speak and write English will find any Business English programme difficult to understand.

What is Business English? Business English is Standard English used in the business environment. It is as simple as that.

Therefore, most Malaysians should concentrate on improving their **Basic English** before they embark on a Business Communication or Business English programme.

Malaysian employees who work in organisations prefer training programmes which place emphasis on how to speak and write English clearly and correctly.
In fact, these Malaysians are constantly looking for such training programmes as they can be more confident in speaking and writing English clearly and correctly.

🔷 The Importance of Sentence Structures and Patterns🔷
When these Malaysians understand the basic sentence-patterns and sentence structures found ONLY in the English language, they know how to speak and write English clearly and correctly. As a result, they can write emails, business letters and simple reports confidently.

It is very important for HR Managers and Training Managers to realise this aspect of equipping the employees with the vital knowledge of Basic English along the right lines.

🔷 A Strategic Recommendation for Organisations 🔷
Therefore, most Malaysian organisations must implement training programmes which place emphasis on **Basic English** before they send their employees to attend a Business Communication or Business English programme.

Learning English is one thing. Using English in real-life situations is a different thing altogether.

🔷 Build the Foundation First🔷
Therefore, most Malaysian employees should embark on improving their knowledge of Basic English before they pursue any Business Communication or Business English programme.

**Fix Basic English first. Then Business English will make sense.**
