WONDERS OF THE OCEAN CAMP

DAY 5 - 06122024

Let's Keep The Ocean Clean

What's happening?

Straw and paper cup act as a mechanism for opening and closing the gripper. This mechanism is to ensure ease of use and effectiveness in picking up various types of rubbish.

The mechanism represents the cleanup tool in ocean, to clean the rubbish on and in the ocean.

What's Happens To Our Coral?

Coral and algae depend on each other to live.

The algae is the main source of food for the coral and gives the coral its colour.

The coral provides the algae with shelter and nutrients.

When corals are stressed by warm ocean currents, it causes the algae to leave, thus turning the coral pale or white. (When ocean water is too warm, it causes the algae to leave the coral, so the coral turns pale or white.)

Our experiment shows how warm water can change the colour of the coral.

Thermochromic pigments are a type of colour-changing pigment that respond to changes in temperature.

They are designed to change colour or become transparent when exposed to heat, and then revert back to their original colour as they cool down.

Water Flow

What's happening?

Ocean currents are horizontal movement in the ocean, like a huge river flowing from one place to another.

This is sometimes caused by difference in temperature, like cold waters to warm waters and warm waters to cold waters.

Crystal Coral

What's happening?

Corals are fascinating animals that form reefs. These reefs provide food and habitat for about 25 percent of the world's fishes.

Coral are made up of hundreds to thousands of tiny coral creatures called polyps which secretes a hard outer skeleton of limestone (calcium carbonate) that attaches either to rock or the dead skeletons of other polyps.

We can make some beautiful corals by using Borax solution and colourful pipe cleaners.

As the temperature of a Borax powder solution drops, Borax molecules attaches itself to the pipe cleaner to form a solid or crystals.

As more molecules, are attached to it, the crystals become bigger, in a distinct pattern.

Catch The Big One

What's happening?

Fishing rods are poles to catch fish. It has a reel (silicone tube) that you can wind your string on and by placing a hook (magnet) at the other end, you can catch the fish.
The reel helps the string to move smoothly. Let us make our own fishing rod!

STEAM is an educational philosophy that originated in the U.S. government to strengthen education in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics from kindergarten to secondary (between the ages of 4 to 18).

Today, STEAM education is the most important education system in the global education community, which is interdisciplinary and project-based system learning. This experience will deepen and strengthen students' understanding of the concepts in various field while inspiring their imagination and finding solutions.

STEAM education has 8 characteristics.

First: interdisciplinary. It means that educators are in Steam Education, they will focus on specific issues, applying multidisciplinary interrelated knowledge to solve practical problems.

Second: fun. Emphasize that multidisciplinary knowledge being integrated into challenging activities close to students life. The activities designed can inspired children's learning motivation and increases their sense of accomplishment in the process of solving problems.

Third experience. STEAM education not only advocates acquiring of abstract knowledge through self-study or through teachers, but also emphasizes on students' hands-on, brainstorm and participation in the learning process.

Fourth: situational. STEAM does not teach students isolated, abstract knowledge of the subjects, but emphasizes on restoring knowledge to the abundant life, combined with interesting and challenging problems in life, and completes the teaching through solving of students problems

Fifth: collaborative. The collaborative nature of STEAM education requires the design of the learning environment should include two elements of "collaboration" and "conversation" advocated by constructivism: let students work in a small group to collect and analyze learning materials, propose and verify hypotheses, and evaluate learning outcomes at the same time, let learners discuss how to complete the specified learning tasks through conversations.

Sixth: design. Through design, students can better understand the completed and solve open problems. In this process, they learn knowledge, exercise their abilities, and improve their STEAM literacy.

Seventh: empirical. The empirical nature of Science is one of the basic and important feature that distinguishes Science from other subjects. STEAM education encourages students to design their works based on scientific principles, test hypotheses, discover and develop solutions based on evidence.

Eighth: technology enhancement. STEAM education emphasizes that students should have

a certain degree of technical literacy. Students should understand the application and development process of technology, and have the ability to analyze how new technologies affect themselves and the surrounding environment.

Coral Fish

What's happening?

There are various species of fish in the ocean, with different sizes, shapes and colours.

Air-dry dough is used to mould and shape a 3-D fish on paper cut-outs.

Air-dry dough is made from flour, baking soda, glue and water.

When exposed to air, the water content begins to evaporate which causes the dough to dry out and harden over time.

Just Paddle

What's happening?

When you wind the rubber band up, it has potential energy (stored energy). When you release the rubber band, the paddle spins, pushing on the water, or exerting a force.

Since the paddle pushes on the water, the water also pushes back on the paddle, pushing the boat forward (Newton's third law of motion).

In other words, spinning the paddle of the boat pushes the water, and the water helps the boat to move forward.

The potential energy stored in the rubber band is converted to kinetic energy (moving energy) as the boat moves forward.
