Sometimes when a child feels overwhelmed, angry, or full of restless energy, their body is looking for pressure and movement to help their nervous system settle.
One simple strategy that can really help is wall presses.
When a child pushes against a wall, the muscles in their arms, shoulders, and core work hard. This is called “heavy work”, and it gives the brain strong sensory feedback that helps the nervous system organise itself.
In simple terms, the body gets the message: slow down, we’re safe.
That’s why activities like wall presses can help a child who is feeling dysregulated, frustrated, or overstimulated. The pressure through the muscles and joints can release some of the built-up energy and help the brain move back towards calm.
Sometimes calming the brain starts by working the body.
