USM TESOL Students Gain Global Perspectives through a Two-Week International Mobility Exchange in China
SCHOOL OF EDUCATIONAL STUDIES, USM, 3 June 2026 โ Ten students from the Bachelor of Education (TESOL) programme at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) recently participated in a two-week International Mobility Exchange Programme at Guizhou Education University, China. The programme consisted of a one-week physical mobility experience in Guizhou Education University, China from 16 to 23 May 2026, and one week offline collaboration 24-29 May, 2026, followed by an academic seminar held on 3 June 2026 focusing on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in language classrooms. The seminar involved 84 participants from USM, Guizhou Education University, and Zunyi Medical University. The initiative provided participants with a unique opportunity to engage in cross-cultural learning, explore innovative educational practices, and develop a broader understanding of global education.
Throughout the week-long programme, students immersed themselves in both academic and cultural activities designed to promote international collaboration and intercultural competence. As future educators, the participants were given the opportunity to observe classroom practices, interact with Chinese students and lecturers, and gain insights into the countryโs rapidly evolving education system.
A key focus of the programme was the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technologies in teaching and learning. Participants observed how technology was incorporated into classroom instruction to create engaging and interactive learning experiences. These observations encouraged students to reflect on how emerging technologies can be effectively utilised to enhance teaching practices in their future careers.
The second component of the programme was a seminar held on 3 June, which brought together participants from USM and students from China for discussions on the application of AI in language teaching and learning. The seminar provided a platform for exchanging ideas, sharing experiences, and exploring the opportunities and challenges of integrating AI tools into language classrooms. The discussions highlighted the growing importance of digital literacy and innovative pedagogical approaches in contemporary education.
Beyond the classroom, the programme offered valuable opportunities for cultural exchange. Through interactions with local students, campus visits, and cultural activities, participants gained first-hand experience of Chinese traditions, customs, and daily life. These experiences allowed students to appreciate cultural diversity while building meaningful friendships with their international peers.
The mobility programme also served as a platform for strengthening educational ties between Malaysia and China. By bringing together students and academics from different backgrounds, the initiative fostered mutual understanding, knowledge sharing, and collaboration across borders. Such experiences are increasingly important in preparing future educators to work in diverse and globally connected learning environments.
The students were accompanied by Dr Rohaya Abdullah, Professor Dr Muhamad Kamarul Kabilan Abdullah, and Dr Yusnita Md Yunus, whose guidance and support contributed significantly to the success of the programme. Their mentorship helped students maximise both the academic and personal benefits of the international experience.
Reflecting on the programme, participants described the experience as transformative and inspiring. Exposure to different teaching approaches, educational technologies, and cultural perspectives enabled them to broaden their horizons and deepen their appreciation for the role of education in connecting people across nations.
According to programme leader Barrathi A/P Narendran, the mobility exchange provided invaluable opportunities for personal growth and professional development.
โThis programme has allowed us to learn beyond the boundaries of a traditional classroom. We gained new perspectives on education, experienced a different culture, and developed friendships that transcend national borders. Most importantly, the experience has inspired us to become educators who are adaptable, innovative, and globally minded,โ she said.
The International Mobility Exchange Programme reflects USMโs commitment to producing graduates who are prepared to meet the challenges of a globalised world. By combining academic engagement with cultural immersion and academic dialogue on emerging technologies, the programme not only enhanced studentsโ professional competencies but also cultivated the intercultural understanding and global awareness essential for future educators.
As the participants returned home, they brought with them not only new knowledge and experiences but also a renewed motivation to contribute meaningfully to the field of education. The programme stands as a testament to the value of international collaboration in shaping the next generation of educators and strengthening educational partnerships between Malaysia and China.

Seminar ProKAI Perkasa Kepimpinan AI dan Pendidikan Berkualiti di Pulau Pinang
PULAU PINANG, 14 Mei 2026 โ Pusat Pengajian Ilmu Pendidikan (PPIP), Universiti Sains Malaysia dengan kerjasama Majlis Pengetua Sekolah Malaysia serta Sektor Pengurusan Sekolah, Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Pulau Pinang telah berjaya menganjurkan Seminar Kepimpinan AI dalam Pendidikan (ProKAI) di Auditorium Murad Mohd Noor, Sains@USM.
