[Book Launch/Talk] The “Communist” Role I Played: Undercover During the 2nd Malayan Emergency (1968-1989)

📅 9 September 2026, Wednesday
🕓 4:00pm–5:30pm
📍 Karpal Singh Hall, School St. Xavier’s Institution

What did it take to operate undercover deep in the jungles of Perak during the Second Malayan Emergency?

Join Datuk Paul Kiong, a retired Royal Malaysia Police Special Branch officer and one of only four living recipients of the Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa (SP), Malaysia’s highest gallantry award for extreme bravery.

In his book, The Communist Role I Played, Datuk Paul Kiong recounts his 31 years with the police, including his undercover work among communist insurgents during the 1968–1989 Emergency. Working through trust, negotiation and careful relationship-building, his operations led to the capture of 43 members of the Fifth Assault Unit without a single shot being fired.

At this book launch and talk, Datuk Paul Kiong will share his first-hand experiences and reflections on a pivotal period in Malaysia’s history. The session will be moderated by Dato’ Dr Ooi Kee Beng.
