Dear all,
The IEEE Malaysia Communications Society & Vehicular Technology Society (ComSoc/VTS) joint Chapter will be hosting the IEEE Global Communications Conference (Globecom) in Kuala Lumpur from 4 to 8 December 2023. Globecom is one of the IEEE Communications Society’s two flagship conferences dedicated to driving innovation in nearly every aspect of communications.
Globecom 2023 with the theme “Intelligent Communications for Shared Prosperity” will feature a comprehensive high-quality technical program including 13 symposia and a variety of tutorials and workshops. This conference will also include an attractive Industry program, with keynotes and panels from prominent research, industry and government leaders, business and industry panels, and vendor exhibits.
Globecom2023 Student Volunteer (SV) program is a wonderful opportunity for young researchers to familiarize themselves with state-of-the-art communications research. It also allows enthusiastic students to establish and expand their network with the most relevant academicians, professionals, and other students in the field. We are in the process of recruiting a team of reliable and enthusiastic students who will help us to host and manage a successful, productive, and enjoyable conference. Since we are expecting more than 2000 participants for this conference, we need around 80 to 100 student volunteers to assist the committee members throughout the whole conference.
For the time and immeasurable efforts, SVs will receive the following benefits:
- Daily allowance to cover travelling and meals
- Globecom2023 SV t-shirt
- Look at how world level conference being organized
- Provide opportunities to interact with professionals in academia and industry in the telecommunication industries
- e-Certificates
Priorities will be given to IEEE ComSoc student or graduate student members. (If you are already an IEEE student member, you can just add ComSoc student membership at USD1). There will also be meetings and training to be conducted for successful applicants.

On 24th June 2023, during the IEEE Inspirational Night 2023, IEEE MMU Student Branch has won 2 awards:
1. 2022 IEEE Malaysia Outstanding Student Volunteer Award - Lim Min Ying
2. 2022 IEEE Malaysia Activity Innovation Award - Smart Farming using IoT and Signal Processing by IEEE MMU Student Branch.
The awards were presented by Prof Emeritus Lance Fung, the Director of the IEEE Asia & Pacific Region. Congrats to Min Ying and Asif Shaik!

According to the World Bank in 2021, global food prices have risen 📈 by 38% since January 2020. In Malaysia, *the issue of food security* has gotten worse due to inadequate food production, leading to increased costs for basic everyday food. Hence, there is a need for *urban farming* - an art of cultivating and processing food in urban areas, ensuring a sustainable supply of fruits, vegetables and meat.

In conjunction with IEEE PES Day 2023 themed "Powering a Climate Safer Future" 🌏, the IEEE MMU Student Branch PES Student Branch Chapter, IEEE MMU SB and Ensoc MMU Cyberajaya will be organizing a study visit to an urban smart farm. IEEE R10 SAC Student Research Paper Contest is now open for submissions!

The IEEE Region 10 Student Activities Committee recognizes the importance of research and dissemination of the findings for the advancement of science and technology. Researching, writing, and presenting a paper provides students with invaluable early experience in communicating ideas related to their professional fields. The contest allows IEEE Student members to exercise and improve written communication skills.

There shall be 3 research areas for the competition:
• Power and Energy
• AI and Robotics
• Communications and Signal Processing.

The best entry for each of the categories shall be awarded USD 300 cash prize and an e-certificate.

The schedule of the contest is given below:
• Call for Submissions: April 17, 2023
• Submission Deadline: May 31, 2023
• Processing Period: June 1 to June 30, 2023
• Assessment Period: July 1 to July 31, 2023
• Winners Notification: August 30, 2023

Exciting news! The IEEE MMU SB has just won 2 grants worth a total of 963 USD under the IEEE Pre-U STEM Education Grants for the Electric Adventures Workshop and Arduino Youth Exhibit (AYE).

Electric Adventures is a workshop intended to educate primary school students on the fundamentals of electricity generation in a fun and interactive way, while also ensuring that students are able to do so in a hands-on manner using educational generator kits. It is hoped that this workshop will breed an interest toward STEM amongst children, possibly inspiring them to be future pioneers in engineering and technology.

Arduino Youth Exhibit (AYE) on the other hand, is an event tailored for secondary school students, where we anticipate participation of 10 teams from schools across Malaysia. In this event, students will be provided with Arduino kits along with various sensors and actuators as well as training from select trainers from MMU with the assistance of student volunteers from IEEE MMU SB. It is hoped that this event will cultivate innovation amongst teenagers, who are expected to be at the forefront of STEM in the near future.

We are delighted by the grant acceptance for both events and cannot wait to see Electric Adventures and AYE become hugely successful, providing an outstanding platform for innovative ideas and projects in the dynamic field of STEM.
