*coz surprise, surprise! Went the wrong way

Talk about destroying your feet in one race but then telling yourself, “at least the next one will be on trail… the ground won’t be so brutal.”

Only to find out almost 80% of the course is gravel — not tiny pebbles, but big white rocks that never seem to end.

Came into this race already worried because I know my feet hadn’t fully recovered from Kajang Ultra. Imagine my horror when I found that the gravel was never ending. By 15KM, every step already felt like hell.

On the outside, I probably looked strong. Inside, I was quietly screaming and gaslighting myself into thinking nothing hurt just to keep going.

This race destroyed my feet more in ways I can’t even fully explain, but it also showed me something else. The caves, the rivers, the silence in between… they reminded me how much the body and mind can actually endure.

I got lost more than once and I literally had to stop myself from spiraling at one point, “getting stressed won’t do you any good, go around and do whatever you can to make up for the time.”.

Every loop I tried searching for softer ground, even ending up deeper in thorns instead. I fell in caves, bruised my knees, slipped in rivers, and twisted my ankle trying to stay upright.

But I also met people along the way — friends, strangers… fellow runners fighting their own battles. I tried to encourage some while I was barely holding myself together. That shared suffering made it feel less lonely.

In the end, this wasn’t about winning. It was about learning what I can survive when everything feels like it’s breaking.

Grateful for my teammates, family, and friends who kept believing in me, even when I was deep in it.

I always get asked…
“Why are you always wearing tapes?”

It’s not because I’m always injured.

I’ve been wearing them since my first race — and it’s always been about staying aware of my body.

With the amount of running, strength work, and fight training I do daily, I don’t wait for injuries to happen.
I manage my weak points early.

The tapes help me stay aware of my joints, support small niggles, and move better especially when fatigue kicks in.

It’s not about looking injured.
It’s about staying in the game longer.

“Maybe I should try it too?”

Probably the most dangerous question I always ask myself when I see people doing incredible things. I don’t always believe I can do everything, but I know I’ll never find out if I don’t try. So I signed up for my first time-based ultra race.

I came in with a plan: push the first half, then manage whatever was left for the remaining hours. But that plan changed the moment I realised the track was cemented, not the softer surface I expected. Over time, it wasn’t just fatigue… it was impact. Every step added up, every stride hurt… and it stopped being about pace, it became about managing my body just to keep going.

At some point, it didn’t feel like a race anymore. It felt like survival. Everyone out there — runners and crews — just trying to get through it in our own way, and somehow that made the whole experience even more meaningful. As a first edition, there were a few hiccups, but it was a strong start with a lot of potential to grow.

This is where how I trained really mattered. I didn’t have the highest mileage, but I focused a lot on strength — building a body that could handle stress, impact, and fatigue. Not just running more, but training with intent.

I couldn’t have done this without the people behind my back — my family and friends, and fitness communities especially x Secret Training.

Hyrox Singapore | Mixed Doubles

How we, two impulsive ultra idiot trail runners with questionable life decisions and no-to-minimal Hyrox preparations, somehow went sub 70… a day after we both sent solo.

No game plan, just delulu 🤣
Signed up like it was a long run.
Split stations based on who looked less dead.
Heavy sled? “You strong today ah?”
Running? “Ok I go, I still got trauma from yesterday but it’s fine.”

Zero strategy. 100% chaos.
Turns out endurance + stubbornness + a bit of ego = decent results.

Moral of the story:
We’re mentally ill, maybe 🤣

Also, finally became a race pwincess! 💅💃

Pushing a sled thrice your bodyweight when you never trained for it is hell. Hahahaha

STANDARD CHARTERED HANOI MARATHON - HERITAGE RACE 2025

Went into this race not aiming for anything but just to finish before the first balloons. Things changed after I started running and feeling great despite the heavy rain. Thought “ahh maybe I can beat my PB?” I adjusted my pacing strategy to cater for the long distance and everything was doing great until it wasn’t 🥲

Came the alleyways with sharp turns, rolling hills, narrow streets, and endless puddles. That’s when everything started to fall apart. It was too brutal for my injured legs that I couldn’t do anything and with a heavy heart, I started to do run-walk alternates.

Almost gave up until I saw the first balloons behind me. Too prideful to let go of a sub-4, kept telling myself, “Pain is just in the mind. Keep moving.” And somehow… I did.

Despite the struggle, this race turned into such a beautiful runcation. Running through Hanoi’s streets, hidden alleys, and old neighborhoods felt like a city tour on foot… rain, chaos, culture and all. There’s something magical about discovering a place at marathon pace.

A memorable runcation with my family, and forever grateful to Ahotu for the race slots.
