📊 93,199 AUTISTIC MALAYSIANS ARE NOW REGISTERED — IS MALAYSIA READY FOR WHAT COMES NEXT?

Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Lim Hui Ying told the Dewan Negara that, as of 30 June 2026, Malaysia had 849,775 active OKU registrations. Of these, 93,199 were registered under the autism subcategory.

That is about 11%—or roughly one in nine—of all active OKU registrations. This does not mean one in nine Malaysians is autistic. It refers only to people registered with the Social Welfare Department, JKM.

Timeline
→Autism registrations have continued to rise as awareness, screening, diagnosis and registration improve.
→On 31 May 2026, 91,681 autistic individuals were reportedly registered with JKM.
→By 30 June 2026, the figure had increased to 93,199—an increase of 1,518 registrations in one month.
→Nearly 87% of those registered under the autism subcategory are below 19 years old.
→The government introduced a one-off RM1,000 autism learning-fee subsidy for eligible children in 2026. Applications closed on 15 July 2026.
→The Bangi Autism Service Centre now provides screening, intervention and caregiver support, but its capacity remains small compared with the national need.

The real question is no longer only whether Malaysia can identify more autistic individuals. It is whether education, intervention, employment, independent-living and adult-support services can expand quickly enough to support them throughout life.

More registrations mean greater visibility—but visibility must be followed by access, planning and long-term support.
