Unmotivated students from underprivileged communities risk academic failure that can further contribute to the socioeconomic gap. Arus is an afterschool space that gives students meaningful learning experiences by allowing them to apply their knowledge through making, creating and innovating ideas and solutions that can bring relevance into their education.

There are many reasons to why the students are not performing well in school. The most comprehensive one is the lack of accountability of all the stakeholders involved in making teaching and learning meaningful. From ineffective delivery in the classroom, missing connection of the knowledge applicability in real life to the unmotivated students when it comes to academic achievement all contribute to both the deteriorating results and conduct in school. Most parents are also not fully involved in their child’s development in school neither is the surrounding community providing a supportive environment for the child to excel as they act as passive observers when it comes to the child’s misbehaviors outside of school compound. Arus is an education intervention that hopes to motivate students back into being interested in learning through its creative solutions. Through embracing the maker education philosophy, Arus puts back relevance into learning through its project based curriculum that integrates science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics into everyday lessons. Arus hopes to develop students who are life long independent learners who has the grit, confidence and knowledge to change their life’s trajectory through education.

Arus’ July calendar recap & team whereabouts. tl;dr: We were everywhereeee: from Chow Kit to Penang to Negeri Sembilan to Sabah to Kuching to Melaka to Gua Musang!

Takes a little kinda crazy belief and a LOT of heart from the team and also many many (many) supporters to have made all things in July happen.

THANK YOU to all the amazing, driven, purposeful & big hearted people who were part of our July (from our team to our funders to the teachers to students to administrators to parents and more), we could never express enough gratitude to you for being part of this brave movement to ensure a Malaysia where every child flourishes in a nurturing learning environment.

Here's to being a step closer to breaking down barriers to equitable learning 💪

Maker Academy Classes @ Penang: Our students kicked off their project-making journey by warming up their fine motor skills and getting hands-on with real maker tools, handling a craft blade, hot glue gun, and screwdriver.

Follow Arus Maker Programmes for more on their progress. They have a Students' Exhibition coming up!!

FS4A Central District Training @ Negeri Sembilan: We trained schools in all 6 districts in Negeri Sembilan and here we are in Tampin N9 district with our partners from Google.

The FS4A Central programme is supported by Google together with , UNICEF Malaysia , Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation. and CelcomDigi Berhad. It’ s an expansion after previous implementations in 6 districts in Selangor last year.

Participating schools receive support to run student-led digital projects in their own communities, giving students opportunities to apply coding, computational thinking and digital problem-solving skills beyond the classroom.

FS4A K9/K11 @ Kelantan: FS4A K9/K11 is an initiative with , , , where we run our Future Skills for All programme over 3-4 days for students and teachers in K9 & K11 schools.

K9 and K11 schools in Malaysia are special comprehensive educational models created by the Ministry of Education to keep students from rural, remote, and Orang Asli communities from dropping out.

Arus’ July calendar recap & Team whereabouts.

10 years later and we still have pinch-me-moments whenever we look back at our calendar and see what we’ve been up to.

Undoubtedly kept our team on their toes (thank you everyone), but grateful to have the opportunity to be running meaningful learning adventures with our students and teachers.

Behind every heartbreaking headline we've been seeing lately is a more important question: How can we better support young people before they reach a crisis?

Our CEO & Co-founder, Alina Amir, joined BFM 89.9 The Business Station to discuss student mental health, early intervention, and what it takes to build safer, more supportive schools.

Imagine students who are not able to answer the ever popular question “What is your passion?”

“For children living in a marginalised community, the world rarely asks what they want; it only tells them what they lack.
In those early days, their silence wasn’t a lack of interest, but a lack of practice in having a voice”.

Read on to see how the journey developed for the students and teacher Felicia over 7 years.
