🌏 **Why was Hong Kong the only choice for the 11th World KenKen Championship?**

I just returned from leading the team at this "Clash of the Titans" in Hong Kong, and many people have asked me: what was so special about this competition?

The biggest milestone is—**this is the first time in history, since its inception, that the World KenKen Championship has been held outside the United States!**

And the reason Hong Kong was chosen as the first Asian stop is due to its irreplaceable advantage as an "international city-state": **it is incredibly convenient for bringing the "world" together.**

In this metropolis, we effortlessly gathered 162 top Sudoku brains from 8 countries and regions around the globe (the USA, Japan, Australia, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan).

It is precisely because of Hong Kong's international accessibility that you could witness such a peak showdown crossing borders and ages in the same arena:
🇺🇸 The legendary American champion who has stood at the top of the world for years, John Gilling;
🇨🇳 The formidable Chinese prodigy, Zheng Zexuan;
🇯🇵 The deeply experienced Japanese veteran, Yochi Enta;
🇲🇾 And of course, our Malaysian team, who impressively snatched 4 of the top 10 global spots in the "Founder's Cup" Challenge!

KenKen is a mind sport that requires no language to communicate. Hong Kong's international inclusivity made this ultimate collision of underlying logic, free from language barriers, completely possible.

I am deeply honored to have been in this international metropolis, watching Coach Lye Zhang Cheng withstand the immense pressure in the final arena to secure a precious World Bronze trophy for Malaysia. To let the world witness Malaysia's logical prowess, Hong Kong was absolutely the perfect stage! 🇲🇾🏆

I initially just wanted to take the kids out to see the world. I didn't expect them to take the world by storm.

Seeing the report from *China Press* today, many friends reached out to congratulate us.
Honestly, before departing for Hong Kong, I kept reminding the team of one thing:
Don't think about winning the world championship; just focus on not getting intimidated by the world champions.

Because what we were facing was no ordinary competition.
It was an arena consisting of 162 world-class players from 8 countries and regions.
There were legendary champions who had stood at the top of the world for consecutive years, prodigies who had battled on the international stage since childhood, and deeply experienced veterans.

Our goal had always been simple.
Bring Malaysia to the world stage.
Leave the rest to the competition.

As it turned out, they really gave me a bit of a headache.
The Founder's Cup only takes the top 10 globally. The elimination rate is nearly 90%.
I originally thought that as long as one Malaysian player broke through, our trip would already be worth it.
Instead, four of them marched in together.
Out of the global top 10, we took four spots.

Sitting in the audience, I wasn't particularly excited.
Because I knew the truly difficult battle had only just begun.
In a tournament of this caliber, speed is no longer your biggest enemy.
Mistakes are.

One wrong cell.
One second of hesitation.
One misjudgment.
Everything goes back to zero.

Eason was just a tiny bit away from a higher ranking.
Any regrets?
Of course.
But just being able to stand there proved that he had earned the right to compete at the same table as the world's absolute best.

On the other hand.
Coach Lye Zhang Cheng, with an almost zero-mistake performance, captured the World Bronze medal for Malaysia in the highest-level final globally.

Many people see a medal.
I see 15 years of perseverance.
Fifteen years ago, very few people insisted on foundational training.
Fifteen years later, we can finally tell the world with absolute calmness:
Malaysia's logic education is on the right track.

Thank you to *China Press* for the report, allowing more people to know about these kids.

In this competition, we didn't create a miracle.
We merely brought what we've been repeating every day for the past 15 years onto the world stage.

If there is anything to be proud of.
It's not because we won a match.
It's that starting today, when other countries in the international arena see "Malaysia" in the draw, they probably won't just see us as a team here to "learn from experience" anymore.

Next edition.
I will continue to lead the team.
And continue to raise our national flag to even higher places. 🇲🇾

(Yochi Enta)*

正如他赛前对这群年轻天才的宣战:“非常有幸挑战比我教的学生还要小的对手,我觉得是一种荣耀!(I'll be honored just to compete alongside such big names as Zheng Zexuan and Eason!)”

John Gilling*

Eason

# 🏆 [The Ultimate 162-to-3 Comeback] Facing a Four-Time World Champion and a Chinese Prodigy! Malaysian Brilliance Stuns the World in the “World Elite Arena”! 🇲🇾

At the recently concluded *11th World KenKen Sudoku Championship 2026 in Hong Kong, China*, we witnessed a true clash of extraordinary minds and an astonishing comeback that left everyone holding their breath!

In the prestigious *KenKen Founder’s Cup Challenge*, which represents one of the highest international honours in the competition, the Malaysian team achieved a remarkable historic breakthrough!

What does it take to reach this world-class podium?

Let us take a closer look at this breathtaking *Elite Selection Battle*.

---

# # 🔥 Challenge One: A 162-Player Battle Across Ages and Borders

This World Championship brought together *162 elite minds from around the world*, representing:

*Six countries, including the United States, Japan, Australia, China, Malaysia, and Indonesia, as well as two regions, Hong Kong and Taiwan.*

From China alone, top competitors travelled from *21 cities*, including Beijing and Shanghai, to take part in the championship!

This was a true intellectual showdown that transcended all age boundaries.

Just look at the world-class challengers faced by the Malaysian competitors:

* 🇨🇳 *China’s 10-year-old prodigy, Zheng Zexuan*
A national fifth-dan Sudoku player who has demonstrated extraordinary ability in numerous competitions.

* 🇯🇵 *Japan’s 60-year-old veteran, Yochi Enta*
A highly experienced competitor with a deep background in competitive Sudoku.

* 🇺🇸 *American legendary four-time champion, John Gilling*
This high-school mathematics teacher from Brooklyn, New York, dominated the World KenKen Championship for four consecutive years from *2016 to 2019*!

Determined to achieve an unprecedented *fifth consecutive championship*, he had barely finished his honeymoon celebration on July 7 before immediately taking several connecting flights and travelling overnight to Hong Kong.

Before the competition, he expressed his respect for the young prodigies he was about to face:

*“I’ll be honoured just to compete alongside such big names as Zheng Zexuan and Eason!”*

Every competitor standing on this stage had passed through multiple levels of challenge and proven themselves to be an exceptional logical thinker.

---

# # 🔥 Challenge Two: A Four-Minute Ultimate Test, and the Top 10 Emerged!

After nearly two hours of intense competition in the standard rounds, the top competitors from each category advanced to the first stage of the Founder’s Cup Challenge:

*Complete a 7×7 KenKen puzzle within just four minutes!*

Speed, judgement, and accuracy were all essential.

A single mistake could affect a competitor’s chance of advancing.

After this elite selection round, only the *10 fastest competitors* successfully moved forward.

And among these 10 competitors representing the highest level of global competition:

*Four were from Malaysia!* 🇲🇾

They were:

*Khaw Eason, Tan Kai Sheng, Teoh Sin Lyn, and Lye Zhang Cheng*

This was not only proof of their individual abilities, but also a major breakthrough for Malaysia on the international KenKen stage!

---

# 🏆 The Stunning Comeback: Nothing Was Certain Until the Final Second!

The most breathtaking moment came during the second stage, the *Top 10 to Top 3 semifinal*.

Competitors had to complete a highly challenging *8×8 KenKen puzzle within six minutes*.

Only:

*The three fastest competitors with completely correct answers could advance to the final championship round.*

The atmosphere in the arena became incredibly tense.

The submission order was as follows:

The first competitor to complete the challenge was the in-form:

🇨🇳 *China’s 10-year-old fifth-dan prodigy, Zheng Zexuan*

Immediately after him:

🇲🇾 *Khaw Eason secured the second submission with remarkable speed!*

The third competitor to finish was:

🇺🇸 *Three-time world champion John Gilling*

And our:

🇲🇾 *Malaysian National Team Head Coach, Lye Zhang Cheng, submitted fourth.*

However, KenKen does not test speed alone.

Precision is equally important.

When the judges checked the answer sheets, they discovered that although Eason had demonstrated exceptional speed, he had made one small mistake while pushing himself to the limit.

Because of that single incorrect cell, he narrowly missed a place in the Top 3.

But Malaysia’s journey was not over!

Coach Lye, who submitted fourth, relied on the composure and consistency built through years of training, together with:

*A completely correct, zero-error solution,*

to achieve a remarkable comeback and advance to the final!

He withstood the enormous pressure from top competitors from China, the United States, and Japan, and secured the final ticket to the championship stage!

---

# 👑 The Ultimate Showdown: Facing a World Champion and Winning a Precious Bronze Medal!

In the final championship round, competitors faced a *9×9 KenKen puzzle with a 10-minute time limit*, bringing the competition to its highest level of intensity.

American legend John Gilling once again demonstrated his world-champion ability and successfully claimed the *Founder’s Cup Championship*.

China’s highly talented prodigy, Zheng Zexuan, finished as runner-up.

Under the pressure of facing two world-class opponents:

🇲🇾 *Coach Lye Zhang Cheng remained composed, completed the puzzle with zero errors, and successfully won the World Third Place bronze trophy for Malaysia!* 🥉

This was an international medal of exceptional value and prestige.

---

# 💡 Behind Malaysia’s Success on the World Stage: Why Is Systematic Training Important?

Eason demonstrated elite-level speed.

Coach Lye demonstrated the power of consistency and precision.

This world-class competition delivered an important lesson for every parent:

At the highest level of competition:

**Speed determines competitiveness,
but a strong logical foundation and the ability to avoid mistakes determine the final result!**

This is the educational philosophy that *mathz4kidz* has upheld for the past 20 years.

Progressing from a complete beginner to competing alongside world champions does not come from endless drilling or blindly completing large numbers of exercises.

It comes from:

*Twist KenKen, originally developed by mathz4kidz, together with the Spiral Approach, which has been officially recognised by KenKen Headquarters in the United States.*

Combined with our independently developed *AI Metadata Tracking System*, we can precisely analyse every step of a child’s thinking process, helping children build the strong logical foundation needed to solve complex 8×8 and 9×9 KenKen puzzles.

Since this time I led the team to Hong Kong to participate in the 11th World KenKen Championship, seeing so many students from different countries gathered at the event truly brought a lot of emotions. In the blink of an eye, it has already been 15 years since we started promoting KenKen.

From the beginning in 2009, it was really driven by a passion for education. I still remember in 2019, I worked together with PMP, visiting 15 primary and secondary schools across Penang, one by one, to share and discuss with teachers how KenKen could benefit their students. That same year, we finally succeeded in organizing the first offline Penang-wide Malaysian Primary and Secondary KenKen Sudoku Competition. At that time, the goal was simple: to share something that could help children develop their logical thinking skills.

Later, during the pandemic in 2020, we organized a large-scale online competition. We were deeply grateful to receive recognition from the Malaysian Ministry of Education (MOE). Gradually, our teaching approach gained international attention. A delegation from Fujian, China even came to Penang to participate, and our Malaysian team competed among 435 talented participants in Shunchang, China, achieving the Team Runner-Up (1st Runner-Up) position.

But what surprised me the most was what happened in 2020. The same KenKen that once required me to visit schools one by one to introduce and teach, its American founder Robert, actually flew all the way to Penang personally! His visit was the greatest recognition for everyone on this land who had continued to promote and develop KenKen. It also strengthened my determination to bring this teaching method to the world.

Today, at the Hong Kong championship venue, I am not only leading the Malaysian team, but also helping arrange for students from Indonesia’s Summarecon Agung and Pahoa schools to participate together.

This year, I have also become a Board Member of the International KenKen Federation, and I feel that the responsibility on my shoulders has become even greater.

15 years have passed. Thank you to all the parents, teachers, and every child who never gave up solving puzzles. This journey has been built through everyone’s collective effort.

From Penang to the World: A Journey of Gratitude 🌏✨
https://youtu.be/0ULxBhkSx9E?si=Zi2mPdVS3LYd-qiQ

For me, what started as a humble vision with mathz4kidz in Penang has now blossomed into an incredible international journey.

It is a profound honor to step beyond our borders and be invited to participate in the historic 125th Anniversary of Pahoa School (Sekolah Pahoa)—the first modern overseas Chinese school in the world.

To witness the ACT Framework (Attitude, Communication, and Thinking)—originally crafted by Dr. Yeap Ban Har for mathz4kidz—taking root and driving the educational transformation at Pahoa is truly humbling. Seeing this framework evolve from our early local days into a core academic engine that prepares students for world-class excellence is beyond my wildest dreams.

Thank you to Ibu Cipto, the Pahoa board, Dr. Yeap, Bro Jishou and everyone who trusted me on this path. Here’s to continuing our mission of empowering the next generation—from our roots in Penang to the global stage! 🚀
