60 Years of Peace, Friendship & Remembrance (Part 3)

SK Suba Buan was honoured to welcome a delegation from the National Malaya & Borneo Veterans Association Australia Inc. (NMBVAA), South Australia & Northern Territory Branch, during their Sarawak Reunion Visit on Friday, 21 August 2026.
The visit formed part of the NMBVAA’s 2026 commemorative programme marking the 60th anniversary of the Malaysia–Indonesia Peace Agreement, also known as the Jakarta Accord, signed on 11 August 1966, which brought an end to the Indonesian Confrontation with Malaysia.
The visit to SK Suba Buan was particularly meaningful as the NMBVAA continues to honour the service and sacrifice of Australian, Malaysian and Commonwealth personnel who served during the post-World War II Malayan conflicts, particularly in Sarawak and the Bau district, where Australian military forces known as the Sarawak Defenders were deployed during the Confrontation.
The programme began with welcoming remarks by the Headmaster of SK Suba Buan and a representative of NMBVAA, followed by a tree-planting ceremony symbolising friendship, peace, remembrance and environmental responsibility. The delegation also had the opportunity to tour the school and learn more about its facilities, achievements and educational environment.
A souvenir exchange ceremony was subsequently held as a gesture of appreciation, friendship and the lasting partnership between NMBVAA and SK Suba Buan. The programme concluded with a group photography session and fellowship lunch.
As part of their visit, the NMBVAA delegation also presented a financial donation and books for the school library, reflecting their continued support for the school community and their commitment to building meaningful connections with the people of Sarawak.
Due to the haze conditions on the day, no pupils attended school and the planned student participation in the programme could not take place. Nevertheless, the visit proceeded successfully with the participation of the NMBVAA delegation and the school’s administrators and staff.
The NMBVAA’s approach to commemoration — Remember the Fallen, Remember Malaysia, Honour the Living and Look to the Future — serves as a meaningful reminder that the lessons of history can strengthen friendship, appreciation and understanding between generations and nations.
