Developed by chemistry lecturers from the School of Distance Education, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Chem Kit 4 Kids, short for Chemistry Kit for Kids, aims to inspire young minds.
This educational material has already benefited over 200 students in Malaysia, and it has now expanded to Indonesia, reaching nearly 100 elementary school students in Surabaya through a collaborative initiative with Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS). This international collaboration serves as a strong example of cross-border cooperation in STEM-based community service. Lecturers from both USM and ITS, along with ITS students, worked together to lead engaging science activities for young learners.
The program introduced basic science and chemistry concepts in a fun and accessible way, transforming regular classrooms into exciting, hands-on learning environments. The activities were conducted at Sekolah Dasar Jagir 1 on October 6, 2025, and at Sekolah Dasar Wonokromo III on October 7, 2025.
Each kit includes science fact sheets and manuals in both Bahasa Malaysia and English, along with an observation sheet. These materials help students better understand the experiments while encouraging them to observe, record, and think like young scientists. The kits are designed to build a strong foundation for the next generation of confident, curious, and science-minded learners.
Teachers from both schools welcomed the program enthusiastically. They observed that students became more active, engaged, and excited during the sessions. The hands-on approach increased participation and helped make science more approachable and enjoyable. The event concluded with a fun closing session where students answered questions related to the experiments and shared their thoughts.
Alhamdulillah.
