The Perseid Meteor Shower this year will peak on 13 August 2026 (Thursday), between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon Malaysian Time - yes, it's during the daytime.

However, the radiant in the constellation of Perseus rises around 00:30 midnight, therefore we would still be able to see some of the meteors from midnight until sunrise on Thursday. With the absence of the new moon in the sky for most of the night, the condition would be excellent for observation. The closer we are towards the dawn, the more meteors are expected to be seen as we approach the peak hours later in the morning.

The Astronomical Society of Penang will be conducting a public observation session on Wednesday night, 12 August 2026, from 10:00 p.m. onward until the next morning (Thursday, 13 August 2026), at the Lim Choon Kiat Observatory located in Pulau Betong, Balik Pulau, Penang.

Want to see the Moon turned to red colour?

We have good news. There will be a total lunar eclipse happening on the night of 7th September 2025 till the early morning of the 8th.
And we are please to invite you to a public stargazing session at the Lim's Observatory at Balik Pulau, Penang.
We will start the event at 11pm and you can stay till 5am the next day.

Admission is FREE.

On top of the lunar eclipse observation, we will try to observe other celestial objects including the planet Saturn.

RARE PLANETARY ALIGNMENT

We are organizing a special observation session for this rare planetary alignment. On this night (weather permitting) we are able to see Venus, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars. Neptune and Uranus will be in the sky too but they are not as impressive as the other planets.

Apart from observing the planets, we can also see other celestial objects like nebulae, star clusters and even galaxies.

You will also be entertained with special show in our planetarium dome theater.

Comet Tsuchinshan/ATLAS taken last night. I can still see the comet with my naked eyes. However it is noticeably dimmer compare to yesterday.
