BLOSSOMING ZEN: SPT EDU CARE STUDENTS PERFORM AT UNIVERSITI MALAYA BUDDHIST SOCIETY CONCERT

On Friday 9 May, the children of Sam Poh Thong Edu Care Centre were delighted to participate in a vibrant cultural concert organized by the Universiti Malaya Buddhist Society (UMBS). Held at SJK(C) Choong Wen in Old Klang Road, the event featured a diverse array of performances, including energetic dances, inspiring dramas, and Buddhist hymns, showcasing the talents of various youth groups.

Among the evening's presentations, our Edu Care students contributed a graceful hand gesture dance to the song "Zen is a Flower" (禅是一朵花). Accompanying the soulful vocals of two singers from UMBS, the children’s synchronized movements and calm focus brought the tranquil essence of the lyrics to life, adding a touch of serenity to the night’s festivities. Through this performance, the children practiced "mindfulness in motion," learning to express the beauty of the Dharma through art and teamwork.

We would like to extend our heartiest congratulations to the Universiti Malaya Buddhist Society or the resounding success of this event. It was a privilege for our young students to share the stage with university youth—a heartening reminder of the continuity of Buddhist education across generations. We are grateful for the platform provided and look forward to many more opportunities for fruitful collaboration in the future as we work together to spread the seeds of Dharma and wisdom.

May the seeds of Zen planted during this celebration continue to grow in the hearts of all who attended, inspiring a life of mindfulness and kindness.

After conducting Sunday School in the morning, our teachers stayed back to join the Introductory Class on Buddhist Chanting & Liturgical Instruments, which concluded its final session today. We are deeply grateful to have invited Venerable Chang Cheng as the instructor for this course. Throughout the sessions, Venerable emphasized the importance of building a solid foundation, especially for beginners.

This includes cultivating the correct mindset and attitude when handling liturgical instruments, maintaining proper 威仪 (dignified conduct), and developing a shared rhythm and tempo in chanting. These are essential foundations for learning to chant and play instruments in harmony.

In this final session, participants also had hands-on practice with the instruments. Venerable reminded us that practice is not merely about technique or display, but about cultivation.Chanting and instruments are not just skills, but part of Dharma practice. Without this foundation, even skillful ex*****on may still be disconnected from the essence of Buddhism and daily life practice.

True learning is not about how well we can chant or play instruments, but about integrating understanding, attitude, and practice into daily life. 🙏

SPT Educare organized an Introductory CPR & AED Session for our secondary school students as part of the Mangala Sutta initiative.

We were grateful to have Brother Wo Kok Lum as the trainer for this session, guiding students through the fundamentals of CPR, the proper use of an AED, as well as how to respond when someone is choking.

Beyond equipping students with essential life-saving skills, this session also aimed to challenge a common misconception—that learning is only for examinations. Many students tend to associate learning with stress, results, and textbooks, leading to a lack of interest when exams are not involved.

Through this session, we hope to reshape this mindset by showing that learning goes far beyond the classroom. Learning is not limited to textbooks, nor is it solely for the sake of exams—it is a continuous process of improving ourselves and becoming more capable individuals.

Aligned with the Mangala Sutta, particularly the verse “bahussuta ca sippañ ca” (being well-learned and skilled), students are encouraged to develop both knowledge and practical life skills. By learning CPR, AED usage, and choking response techniques, they experience firsthand how skills can be meaningful, relevant, and even life-saving.

More importantly, such learning nurtures awareness, responsibility, and compassion—reminding students that true education is not just about knowing, but about becoming someone who can benefit others.

Through this, we hope students can begin to see learning in a new light, and gradually embody the spirit of Dharma in their daily lives. 🙏

Sincere appreciation to BSMM KL Barat for conducting such a wonderful session with us!

Lesson 2 | Buddhist Chanting & Ritual Instrument Introductory Class

Our second session began with a revision of the previous lesson, reinforcing the importance of the right mindset in handling Buddhist liturgical instruments, as well as the practice of chanting.

Building on this foundation, participants moved into hands-on practice, learning to handle the instruments with proper technique and rhythm under guidance.

To support our learning beyond the classroom, everyone has been assigned a simple yet meaningful task — to practise the wooden fish at home, cultivating consistency through daily effort.

Venerable Chang Chen also reminded us to continue our daily cultivation, carrying forward the aspiration we made in the previous lesson.

A step deeper into practice, moving from understanding to doing ✨

Our first session of the Buddhist Chanting & Ritual Instrument Introductory Class has begun 🙏
We are honoured to have Venerable Chang Chen as our instructor for this course.

We started by exploring what is Buddhist chanting (梵呗) — building a strong foundation for all participants before moving into practice. Understanding the meaning, purpose, and spirit behind chanting is the first step towards engaging in it with the right mindset.

At the end of the class, Venerable Chang Cheng guided us to fill in a simple aspiration card — encouraging each of us to begin a small practice or cultivate a wholesome habit over the next 15 days.

A gentle start, but a meaningful step in practice ✨ Looking forward to the upcoming sessions.

📚✨ 21st–23rd March | Teacher Training Camp on the History of Buddhism in India ✨📚

In collaboration with the Universiti Malaya Buddhist Society’s Miaoxi Dharmaduta Training Program, 16 participants from SPT Educare Centre joined 35 peers from UMBS to explore the rich history of Buddhism in India. We were honored to have Venerable Ji Chi as the main speaker, guiding us through the profound lessons of the past.

The camp reminded us that history is not just someone else’s story—it is our story. By reflecting on the decline and revival of Buddhism in India, we learned that the practice of Buddhism should focus on both understanding and action, while meaningfully engaging with the community. It also deepened our understanding of the Buddha’s original intention: compassion for all beings and the ultimate goal of alleviating suffering and attaining liberation. Walking the Dharma path requires us to continuously reflect on whether our practice is reducing suffering in ourselves and others, and to uphold the spirit of helping beings attain liberation.

Through this camp, we also became more inclusive, learning to understand the conditions and causes behind different Buddhist traditions. We realized that while practices and customs may vary, the root and core values of the Dharma remain the same, helping us avoid praising one tradition at the expense of others.

We were further reminded that while the external forms of Buddhism may change over time, its core values must remain intact, or the teachings risk losing their foundation. Protecting the Sasana is vital—the survival of Buddhism until today has not been easy. To truly preserve it, we must first understand and practice the Dharma ourselves; otherwise, Buddhism may exist outwardly, but die within.

This camp was not only a valuable learning journey but also a call to embody the teachings in our daily lives, reflect deeply on our practice, and support the path of liberation for all beings.

As Qingming approaches, many in the Chinese community observe traditional taboos — avoiding activities like hiking or swimming, in hopes of steering clear of misfortune. 🌧

An old text says: “All things grow at this time, pure (清洁) and clear (明净)—hence it is called Qingming (清明).”

And yet, the world we live in today does not always feel so clear.

With ongoing conflicts and uncertainty across the globe, it is natural to feel fear, anger, or even helplessness. And we may begin to wonder:

💭 How should we make sense of what’s happening?
💭 How do we hold on to clarity and compassion within ourselves?

This April, let’s come together to listen, reflect, and share.
