Happy birthday to Dave Garibaldi, 77 years old today. He is a key figure in the development of funk drumming, with a unique and distinctive approach to timekeeping which had previously been unheard.
Best known for his innovative ideas with Tower of Power, Dave Garibaldi is one of the most influential and well respected drummers in the business!

Happy birthday to John ‘Jabo’ Starks, one of the pioneers of funk drumming. Best known for his work with James Brown in the 1960s and ‘70s, Starks played on many dance floor classics including Soul Power, S*x Machine and Get on the Good Foot.
His groundbreaking beats also fuelled the birth of rap and hip-hop music, which made him one of the most sampled drummers of all time!

October 26, 1937 - May 1, 2018

Happy birthday to Earl Palmer, he would have been 99 today. While playing with Fats Domino, Palmer invented the drum beat that would become synonymous with rock n roll music in the early 1950s and beyond.
He later went on to be an important member of the session group known as the Wrecking Crew, who played behind the scenes on hundreds of hit records by many famous artists. Earl Palmer is one of the most recorded drummers of all time!

October 25, 1924 - September 19, 2008

Jazz drumming legend, Joe Morello, is one of the few drummers who could claim to have thoroughly mastered the classic book Stick Control. As a teenager he had the privilege of studying the book with its author, George Lawrence Stone.
Many years later I had the privilege of studying with Joe Morello, and together we worked on exercises from the same book. To this day I’m still working on it!
