How LiDAR Mapped 3,000 Years of Hidden Archaeology in 2 Weeks
Beneath the hills of Sierra Morelos Park in central Mexico lies one of the most significant archaeological landscapes in the region: 16 sites, around 730 hectares of ancient terraces, and over 3,000 years of human occupation. For decades, dense vegetation made large-scale survey nearly impossible. Conventional methods, GPS, tape measures, compass traverses, covered the ground slowly, with limited coverage and months of processing time.
That changed with the DJI Matrice 400 and Zenmuse L3 LiDAR sensor.
In partnership with the Cerro Toloche Archaeological Project, the Faculty of Geography, and the Conahcyt National Laboratory of TIGeSSR at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEMéx), drone services company RPA Security & Defense implemented a comprehensive LiDAR and photogrammetry workflow across 340 hectares of the park. The result: 1.1 billion georeferenced points, a dense point cloud at 236 points/m² with centimeter-level accuracy, and the clearest picture ever produced of the buried structures shaping this landscape — processed in DJI Terra and classified in DJI Modify, in under two weeks.
What once took six months now takes two weeks.
