Almost time for Night of the Radishes — December 23rd 🎄🌶️

If you’ve taken a cooking class, a walking food tour, or an Entre Tierras dinner with us, chances are you’ve already heard about this truly one-of-a-kind Oaxacan celebration.

La Noche de Rábanos began in 1897, when radishes—introduced to Mexico by the Spanish—weren’t exactly winning over local palates. Knowing that Oaxacans have an extraordinary tradition of carving and storytelling (think alebrijes and woodcarving), local authorities organized a radish-carving contest during the Christmas market. The goal? To attract people to the festivities, encourage participation in Catholic celebrations, and—hopefully—get people a little more excited about radishes.

Today, the streets of Oaxaca fill with elaborate, playful, and often political scenes carved entirely from radishes. It’s equal parts art, history, food, and community—and it only happens once a year.
