El Tzitz is a Mexican cooking school located in the beautiful, colonial city of San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas. Who cooks? When?

El Tzitz is located in a beautiful home in the oldest part of town (“El Cerillo”), close to the market. Why “El Tzitz”? “El Tzitz” is the name in Tzotzil of a small local variety of avocados that are from Chiapas. There is a tree in the garden with this delicately, anise flavored avocado. Where? “El Tzitz” is located in the Calle Pitchucalco 4 A, corner with Calle Tapachula. It is the former ho

me of Marcey Jacobson (photographer) and Janet Marren Greenberg (painter), who made this house their home in 1974 and who have spent many happy decades here. The main cook is Irma López, who has cooked for Marcey and Janet for many years and has worked as a cooking teacher since 1998 for Instituto Jovel. However, other cooks also contribute their specialties occasionally. Check our weekly listings on Facebook for scheduled cooking classes. On Wednesday, March 4th, we will be making handmade corn tortillas in our Mexican cooking class. Along with the entire tortilla process, we will make traditional tacos, special quesadillas, and a delicious array of salsas.
