In this second episode of Healing the Healer, we explore how Vipassana reveals the connection between mind, body, and reaction.

Paul Fleischman suggests that many of our responses do not begin with conscious thought, but with bodily sensations that trigger craving, aversion, and automatic patterns of behavior.

Learning to observe those sensations with equanimity creates space between what happens and how we respond.

This mini-series is based on Karma and Chaos by Paul Fleischman, exploring his perspective on Vipassana as a practice of self-knowledge, transformation, and inner responsibility.

The mind can travel into the past, anticipate the future, and make the body react to situations that are not even happening in the present.

The Dhammapada invites us to observe this movement of the mind and recognize how much additional suffering arises when we follow thoughts, memories, and fears as though they were immediate realities.

The practice begins by returning from the story to direct experience: feeling the body, observing the breath, and recognizing the mind as movement, not as a command.

The first day of meditation can feel uncomfortable: the body aches, the mind resists, and simply observing the breath can be harder than expected.

Anapana begins right there: observing the breath as it is, developing concentration, recognizing our reactions, and beginning to understand the mind through direct experience.

What happens when the person caring for others also needs care?

In this mini-series, we explore some of Paul Fleischman’s reflections on Vipassana, contemplative practice, and professional life, based on his book Karma and Chaos.

In this first episode: the relationship between self-observation, inner balance, and the ability to remain truly present in the face of another person’s pain.

A restless mind can mistake movement for clarity. The Dhammapada compares training the mind to the patient work of straightening an arrow: wandering, observing, and returning again and again.

Meditation is not about fighting the mind, but about learning not to follow every thought that appears.
