The stage shows perfection. I am looking for the imperfect souls behind it. I feel the nervous energy before a person runs to the stage; I see friends helping each other. I sense the rush to try and do something amazing to prove to ourselves we are more than human.

I got robbed last week. They stole the camera I had a new video in progress on and about $4k in gear and things from my truck. This sucks. But I’ve decided not to be angry

It was daylight in a busy park in San Juan del Río. I locked the truck and went to do photos. Someone was watching. While I was busy, they broke the locks, loaded everything up, and took off - No one saw a thing!

Thing is, Mexico insurance does not cover this kind of thing.

Be aware when traveling. Some travel policies may cover your stuff, but international stuff is complex. When you live there, even more.

Maybe they saw me with cameras, or maybe they noticed that my old truck did not beep when I locked it, so no alarm.

I’m careful NOT to bring all my gear. I had my main camera on me. But I lost my Contax T film camera, among many other things. I think everything is to help us learn. Help us forgive and help us see more.

Feeling is how we become better photographers.

So I’m going to feel thankful — Some will say, " Oh, that’s Mexico. But theft happens everywhere. In 8 years photographing Mexico, it’s the first time this happened to me. I see beauty here.

Reminders… Remember to look. Maybe take what you can in a shoulder bag. Don’t leave all your gear in one place. But most of all, NEVER let FEAR stop you from creating. I know I won’t.

The error the photographer often makes in the studio is thinking it's about light or a boring headshot. The secret is to look into the eyes, to see the soul; the studio is just another place. But look where shadows meet light, and you will see pure energy in front of the lens.

El error que suele cometer el fotógrafo en el estudio es pensar que se trata de la luz o de un retrato aburrido. El secreto está en mirar a los ojos, en ver el alma; el estudio es solo un lugar más.
