This was one of the areas that I stayed confused about until my 40s! Let me save you lots of time understanding why you do what to each side of an equal sign. Don't freak out! An x (variable) is just a mystery box waiting to have a value assigned to it.

Algebra requires one thing...figuring out how to get x by itself or as I say how to get one mystery box by itself so you can see what it's worth. Everything on each side of the equals sign is about balance. That's it. And the good news is that there are only 4 operations you can apply to create balance. Let me show you what I mean....

Sum of Roots Taco Napkin SAT Math Tricks— I hate quadratics

🚀 Let’s look at a massive SAT shortcut! ✨ This is the "Sum of Roots" trick.🌌 It saves tons of time on quadratics. The SAT often asks for the sum of all possible values (or roots) of x.⏱️ The Slow Way: Use the quadratic formula. Get two messy decimals. Add them together. Waste 60 seconds. 😫 Instead use the Sum of Roots Formula as a shortcut and you're done in 2 seconds!
