Mexico celebrates its Independence Day on September 16, but the main festivities begin the night before, on September 15, with El Grito de Dolores — the traditional “Cry of Independence.” During this ceremony, the president reenacts Miguel Hidalgo’s historic call that sparked the Mexican War of Independence in 1810.
Hidalgo’s cry for rebellion against Spanish rule marked the beginning of Mexico’s fight for freedom. Independence Day later became an official national holiday, first recognized in the Constitution of Apatzingán and celebrated nationwide starting in 1825.
Today, Mexico honors this moment with music, celebrations, and a deep sense of national pride. El Grito reminds us of the courage that shaped the country, and September 16 commemorates the start of the movement that changed Mexico’s history.
